If you place a four-team parlay, going 3-1 is no different than going 0-4. All of your bets must win, or at least tie, in order for you to win. There are basic types of parlays, those wagered against the point spread and those wagered using the money line. The payoffs a bettor will receive should they win are quite different in the two. In parlays involving point spreads, the payoff is fixed, while money line parlay payoffs are determined by the odds of each team. Point Spread Parlays. Point spread, moneyline, and game total options can be used on parlays. Tickets can consist of multiple wagers on a single sport or selections from a variety of sports. For example, on Super Bowl Sunday bettors can build a parlay ticket with the NFL title game and add bets from the NBA and NHL. Original investments are returned on winning parlay wagers. What are the Payouts on Parlay Tickets? Calculating parlay payouts is a complicated process that requires figuring out implied odds. To simplify things, let's use two sides that are both priced with (-110) odds. Those lines convert to 1.91 decimal odds that are then multiplied together to reach 3.64 implied odds. Therefore, Pittsburgh (-110) plus Baltimore (-110) would return a $264 profit on a $100 wager. Calculation: 1.91 X 1.91 = 3.64 implied odds X $100 bet = $264 profit. During the 2020 NFC and AFC Championships games, bettors were asked to pay heavy juice to bet on the Chiefs and 49ers. Wagering on the favorites paid a $58.82 total return on two $100 bets. Bettors who tied Kansas City and San Francisco together earned a $134.95 profit on a $200 two-team parlay. There was added risk since both teams needed to win, but the reward was an extra $76.13 profit. Parlay Betting Pros and Cons. The biggest drawback with parlays is the added risk that comes from needing to select two or more sides. Everyone knows how difficult it can be to pick just one winner. Odds of cashing a single bet are basically 50/50 since one side will win and one side will lose. While the payout goes up, odds of winning get worse with each team added to a parlay ticket. Combos are "all or nothing" bets, as winning three games on a four-team team combo doesn't earn a return. Beyond the large payouts, earned with a small investment, parlays have positives. When possible, it's wise to have a mix of early and late-night games on parlay tickets. If the early games win, an in-game wager on the late-night contest can set up a guaranteed profit. Also, some sportsbooks offer early cashouts to reduce their risk. The payout is lower, but bettors don't need to sweat the games still in play. Hedges and cashouts are personal decisions worth considering.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but not everyone is equally skilled when it comes to sports betting. Most bettors are somewhere near 50-50 (in other words, below the 52.4% clip needed to make a profit on standard point spread bets, with some lower and some higher). And some significantly higher. Now, the term “significantly” needs to be contextualized in that usage. No one is hitting 75% of their plays over time, for example. But a very skilled bettor might be somewhere around 55%, and some could even approach 60%. Bettors who hold such a win rate over a long period of time are called sharps. What Is a Sharp? In sports betting, a sharp is a long-term winning bettor whose opinion is well respected by sportsbooks. When a sharp bettor places a wager, sportsbooks take notice and might even move their lines as a result. If several sharp bettors come down on the same side of a game, the line will almost certainly change — even if that side is not the popular one. How Can You Tell What Sharps Are Betting? There are a few ways to gauge sharp action (what sharps are betting on). Some of the easiest include comparing bet percentages to money percentages as well as line movement, and from locating steam. Bet vs. Money Discrepancies. Something to note about sharp bettors: They aren’t in the gambling business for the thrill of the sweat (though perhaps that’s why many started). They are professionals who see sports betting as a serious source of income. As such, they aren’t just putting $25 down on a game they like. With that in mind, comparing the percentage of tickets (bets) to the percentage of actual money on that side can give a good indication of how sharps are betting. If only 25% of bets are landing on Northwestern in a game against Michigan, for example, but the Wildcats are also accounting for 55% of the money, there’s a pretty good chance that sharps are among that 25%. Reverse Line Movement. Reverse line movement occurs when a betting line moves away from the popular side, and is perhaps the clearest giveaway of sharp action. To return to the example above, if all you know is that 25% of bets are landing on Northwestern, but you see that Michigan has fallen from -10 to -9 since the line opened, you can pretty safely assume — barring no injuries or other game factors changing — that oddsmakers are looking to take on more Michigan action because their sharper customers are betting Northwestern. In other words, step back and ask yourself why oddsmakers would move the spread to make it easier for the majority of their customers to win this bet. They likely have either a significant monetary liability or have been influenced by sharp action. And in many cases, one means the other. Steam Moves. A steam move is defined by a sudden, drastic and uniform line move across the sports betting marketplace, and is usually the result of multiple sportsbooks taking sharp action on the same bet at the same time. Steam is not easily trackable without help from a betting service, as it requires either an odds page — with live updating numbers from all across the market — to be open, or a feature like Sports Insights’ Bet Signals, which track and record each occurrence of steam in real time. Should You Follow Sharp Action? Since sharps are long-term winning bettors, the simple answer to this question is yes, but what makes the answer not-so-simple is that truly following sharp action is almost impossible. Because sharp action usually results in line moves, it’s difficult to make the same bets that sharps are making. Another danger of trying to follow sharp action is that some seemingly sharp moves can wind up being part of a greater “setup” to create a more favorable line for the bet that the sharps actually want to place. For example, a sharp bettor or sharp syndicate (group) may attempt to cause a steam move by placing bets on a given team, only to come back with even bigger bets on the other side once the line has moved to a more desirable number.

Pros tend to bet on opening odds and that action may cause bookmakers to adjust the lines after the initial wagering wave. If a -3.5 NFL point spread favorite is heavily bet, linemakers may move the odds to -4 to create action on the underdog side. Sharps are also known to bet big on one side, in order to move a line, so they can place an even larger wager on the other side. To gain maximum odds value, pro bettors have multiple accounts at several sportsbooks.

And to the inexperienced, sports wagering seems so simple. You pick who wins the game. If you win, you make money. Yes, if it were only that easy. The truth is, it’s not. You only have to look at how much revenue sportsbooks pull in every year to know how hard it is to make money. Do you think bookmakers would bother operating on the wrong side of the law for so many years if sports gambling wasn’t profitable for them? No, they wouldn’t. You need to know how complicated betting is before you can dip your toe into the gambling market. You don’t need to learn complicated strategy overnight, but you need foundational knowledge of the basics before you begin. Important Terms. Sports betting has its terminology you need to know. Though the list of sports betting jargon is long, to understand the rest, you need to learn these terms. Favorite. When bookmakers set their numbers, they decide who they think will win the game and by how much. A favorite is who the bookmaker thinks will win the game, and receives a (-) on the board. A better receives less return for a winning bet on a favorite because they are more likely to win. Underdog. Players receive a greater return on winning underdog bets because these “dogs” are less likely to win. Every bet has at least two sides (there are some with three, but we’ll talk about those later). Each side is given a corresponding number decided by a bookmaker. These sides exist in all three basic bet types. A line is all the numbers that correspond with a bet. This includes the full game or any specific time interval. Types of Bets. Three basic bets serve as the foundation for all sports betting. When you walk into a casino sportsbook or pull up the app for the first time, you will see a series of numbers that are confusing if you don’t know what they mean. Here we will explain the three types of bets and what the corresponding numbers mean. Moneyline. A moneyline bet is a bet for a team or individual to win a contest. It’s the most simple bet to make. This is easy to explain with a real-life example. Say you’re a college football fan and you want to make the championship game more interesting with a wager. You have a good feeling that Ohio State will beat Alabama, so you want to bet them to win. What do those numbers mean for you? If you bet $100 on underdog Ohio State, you win $225. However, to win $100 on Alabama, you must wager $286. As you can see, you can win more money betting on dogs. That doesn’t mean you should always play them. Spread. Sports bettors and bookmakers wouldn’t make much money if they only offered win/lose moneyline bets. If you’re a long-time sports fan you know that sometimes the talent discrepancy between two teams is immense. Spread bets, also known as puck-line bets in hockey and run-line bets in baseball, are how you bet on these games. Every single contest has a corresponding spread. With a spread bet, you bet on a team to win over a certain amount of points or lose by less than a certain amount of points. The bookmaker determines these numbers (in hockey and baseball these numbers are a standard 1.5, though they will move). You have that feeling about Ohio State, but you’re not positive they’ll win. You do think it will be a close game. What does this mean? If you think Ohio State will lose by less than 9 points or win the game, you’ll win your bet at -110. That means to win $100 on that bet you’ll bet $110. If you bet Alabama at -9 -110, that means Alabama must win the game by more than 9 points for you to win. Total. To win an over bet, Ohio State and Alabama must combine to score more than 75.5 points. To win an under bet, these two teams must score less than 75.5. The standard odds on these bets are -110, but they are subject to change. Exotic Bets. Now that you know what the three basic bets are, you can start building exotic bets that are based on them. Parlay. A parlay is two or more bets combined to increase your winnings. Sportsbooks and casinos have different rules on parlays and how you can play them. The only catch? You must win all your bets in a parlay to win. If you go 8 for 9 on a parlay, you lose. Teaser. Sportsbooks allow you to adjust the spreads or point totals on parlay bets through teasers. For football, they offer 6, 6.5, and 7 point teasers. This means your Ohio State and Pittsburgh parlay will have more favorable numbers. Because you’re given more favorable numbers, the book reduces your payout. A 3-way bet is a moneyline bet with three sides. You can bet on Ohio State to win, Alabama to win, or a tie. These bets are offered for the full regulation not counting any overtime, or for set intervals of the game like quarters or halves. You’ll find that the moneyline numbers on a 3-way yield higher payouts. They’re harder to win. If you bet Ohio State on a 3-way line to win the first half and the teams tie, you lose. Round-Robin. If you do this, you have three separate two-team parlay combinations you wager on. You have Ohio State and Pittsburgh, Ohio State and San Francisco, and Pittsburgh and San Francisco. If only one parlay hits, you lost $200 but won $265. That means the book pays out $65. The Logic Behind the Lines. To understand sports gambling, you have to understand how bookies and sportsbooks make money . The primary way sportsbooks make money is through the “juice” or the “vig.” The juice is a commission the book keeps on each bet. When you place a $100 bet on the Ohio State spread, you get your $100 back plus $91 in winnings. On the other side, people who bet $100 on Alabama lose their $100. This $9 difference, or vig, is kept by the book. Because the book profits primarily on the juice, they set their lines to encourage even play on both sides. That Ohio State vs. Alabama spread of 9 points doesn’t mean that a bookie believes Alabama will win by that much or more. They come to that number by determining what margin will entice an equal number of players to make bets on either side. Understanding Line Movement. What happened? Betting lines are not static. When bookmakers release their initial lines, they begin to take bets. They set the original number to encourage play on both sides. Experienced gamblers do not live in a vacuum. They have their ideas about what will happen in any given game. These preferences show with how much money comes in on either side. If money comes in heavy on the Alabama side at -9, the bookmaker will move that number up to get play on Ohio State. These movements can come from consistent public play or a large single wager. When you bet on sports, you have to change how you think about picking games. Winning sports betting is not as simple as beating the sportsbook number. You play the sportsbook and fellow gamblers. How to Win. Winning at sports gambling takes a lot of work and a lot of skill. The best sports bettors often top out at 55%. Given that even the best still lose 45% of the time, you have to expect you’ll lose a lot more when you start. Sports gambling is about so much more than picking who wins. You have to keep your eyes on the numbers and you have to do a ton of research. Stat books and statistical probability are your best friends. Favorites vs. Underdogs. When the oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog. The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites (-7) against the Jets. If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you “cover.” If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a “push,” which means you get back the money you originally bet. If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet. Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball. 3. Moneylines. The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game. Favorites are given a “minus” designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, you’re out $200. Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them. Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer. 4. Over/Unders (Totals) In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under. Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total. For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose. 5. What Is the -110 Number Listed Next to My Bet? The oddsmakers put a “tax” on every bet, which is typically called the “juice” or “vig” (short for “vigorish”). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager. Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) … that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100. You always have to risk more on a favorite than you’d win on an underdog…otherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business. 6. How to Place a Bet. How to Read Odds. Understanding how to read odds is crucial to betting on sports. This guide will teach you how to read odds for moneyline, total, and spread bets. We will be looking at American, decimal, and fractional odds, which are three different ways of writing the same odds. What are Odds? Odds represent the likelihood of an outcome occurring. In sports betting, each team is assigned odds that represent the likelihood of them winning the game. When the odds for two teams are even, meaning 1 to 1, it means that each team is equally as likely to win the game. If Team A is assigned 2 to 1 odds, it means Team B is twice as likely to win. If Team A is assigned 10 to 1 odds, it means Team B is ten times as likely to win. Odds are typically expressed with a positive or negative sign in front of them and are not written as 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. How do Plus and Minus Odds Work? In a betting line between two teams, the team expected to win, or favorite, will have minus or negative odds. This means for every dollar wagered, you will earn less than a dollar if your bet wins. The team expected to lose, or underdog, will have positive or plus odds. This means for every dollar you wager, you will gain more than a dollar if your bet wins. The table below shows an NHL game where the Boston Bruins are favorited to beat the St. Louis Blues. American Odds. American odds are what you will see displayed on almost every sportsbook. Just like the metric system, dates, and miles per hour (mph), Americans do things differently when it comes to betting odds. Take a look at this standard slate of betting odds from for an MLB game. The first thing you will notice when reading odds will be that: Odds have either a plus or minus in front of them Odds are in terms of 100. Betting Odds are written in terms of 100 as an industry standard. The easiest way to think of the plus and minus signs is as follows.
