You Can Deduct Losses if You Itemize. Fortunately, you can deduct losses from your gambling only if you itemize your deductions. Gambling losses can be deducted up to the amount of gambling winnings. The remaining $5,000 in losses would be lost forever; you can’t carry the losses forward. Whereas your winnings are reported by the payer on a Form W2-G, your losses may not be. You will have to produce other documentation to validate the deduction. This can include wagering receipts or tickets, canceled checks, or other receipts. It may also be possible to establish your losses by keeping some type of detailed log. This log should include information such as the date and type of gambling activity, people you gambled with and the amount of your winnings and losses. Under tax reform, you can only deduct losses directly related to your wagers and not non-wagering expenses like travel-related expenses to gambling sites. College Seating Rights for 2018 and Beyond. In a related matter, there’s bad news on the college seating rights front starting with the 2018 tax year under tax reform. Under the old tax law, donors were allowed to make contributions in exchange for the right to purchase tickets or seating at college sporting events with a big tax advantage. They could treat 80% of the contribution as a charitable deduction. The remaining 20% represented the actual cost of the tickets or seating. In this way, the IRS recognized that the majority of money paid for college seating rights represented a charitable contribution, rather than a ticket purchase. Next Swindon Town Manager: Who will replace Richie Wellens? Richie Wellens has left his post at Swindon Town in order to return to the League Two dugout with Salford City. As a result, Swindon have reluctantly opened up the search for a new manager for the first time in two years, back when Phil Brown was sacked in November 2018. Below, we take a look at four potential Wellens replacements in the next Swindon Town manager market… Noel Hunt. We’ll start with the man who, in the absence of Wellens, oversaw Swindon’s mid-week clash against Plymouth: Noel Hunt. Hunt, who was unable to prevent the Robins from losing an entertaining encounter 4-2, joined Swindon as Wellens’ assistant in November 2018 after he left his post as player-coach of Waterford - who are also owned by Swindon chairman Lee Power. “I haven’t had much time to process it to be honest, but [taking over] is something I’ve got to have a serious think about,” when questioned by the Swindon Advertiser after the game. “I’ll have to go and speak to the chairman and Steve Anderson [CEO] to figure out a plan going forward. One thing the club needs is direction, and I feel we are going the right way still. “I regard myself in charge until told otherwise, but we’ve got a game to look forward to on Saturday.” Given the current climate, Swindon could look to make the ‘cheaper’ option and appoint from within. Hunt may have no managerial experience to his name, but the Irishman will no doubt aim to employ the same brand of football as Wellens, and is at least expected to get a run of games before either himself or an exterior manager is appointed on a full-time basis. The odds are likely to change somewhat in the upcoming hours and days, but other potential options for Swindon include Steve Cotterill, Graham Alexander - who Wellens replaced at Salford - plus Simon Grayson, Paul Cook, Paul Hurst and the Cowley brothers. The likes of Michael Duff and Michael Duff have proved to be promising young managers, however Swindon would have to pay compensation as each boss is currently in a job at Cheltenham and Newport respectively.

Total (Over/Under) – Betting on the Over/Under or point total means you’re placing bets on the total number of points scored by both teams. So if a game has a total (or Over/Under) of 65 points before kickoff, you can bet on Over or Under 65 total combined points between the two teams for the entire game. Points scored in overtime are included, which can really rack up in a college football overtime. Additionally, there are point totals for quarters and halves. College Betting Tip: Focus on a conference or a few specific teams when handicapping college football point totals. With so many college football teams and games, oddsmakers are at a disadvantage. You don’t have to beat them on every game, you just need to pick a few spots where you think they’re wrong, which happens a lot more on a college football betting slate than say an NFL Sunday. Vigorish (vig) or Juice – Ever wonder how sportsbooks turn a profit? It’s the vigorish or juice, i.e., the fee sportsbooks take when sports bettors place wagers. This fee is imbedded in the betting ling, giving sportsbooks a mathematical advantage. Sportsbooks typically have a vig of -110 on both sides of a bet, meaning you have to risk $110 for every $100 you want to win. Taking into account the vigorish, you need to win not half of your bets but at least 52.4% to break even. While -110 is typical, some sportsbooks are nicer than others when it comes to charging bettors juice. You will want to use SAO’s odds tool to find which sportsbooks are charging the least amount for all of your college football picks. College Betting Tip: College football is a softer betting market than the NFL, making it easier to win over 52.4% of your bets. Other College Football Betting Terms. Parlay – A parlay involves two or more picks, all of which have to win outright to payout. You have a five-team parlay, and all but one game wins? You hit 80% of your bets, but your parlay still loses just the same as if you went 0-for-5. Two-team parlays traditionally pay 2.6-to-1, three-team parlays pay 6-to-1, four-team parlays pay 10-to-1, etc. Though we refer to these as “two-team parlays,” parlays can consist of picks on the point totals and sometimes even props. Use our parlay calculator for your convenience. College Betting Tip: Parlays attract bettors, especially beginning bettors, with large payouts. But don’t be fooled. Unless you’re confident you have a large edge in two or more games, betting parlays will eat away your sports betting bankroll. Teasers – Like a parlay, teasers require more than one pick, and all picks in your teaser must hit. Teasers are a way college football bettors can move multiple point spreads (or totals) to their favor. Since the points are adjusted for the bettor, teasers do not have the large payouts that parlays do. College Betting Tip: College football games tend to have larger point totals and spreads than NFL games. You can find point totals anywhere from 60-80 points, especially in a pass-happy conference like the Big 12. College football scores are much more volatile than NFL scores, making college football teasers less advantageous. Live Betting – Live betting occurs after a game starts. Did you sleep in and miss the kickoff of an early 11 am college football game? Don’t tilt! Most US sportsbooks will have live lines available for you to bet on while the game is still in progress. College Betting Tip: Your team takes an early lead, but an injury or specific scheme leaves you concerned about your bet? Use live lines to hedge your original pre-game bet, minimizing your potential losses. In some cases, you can use live lines to find “middling” opportunities. A “middle” is when you use two different spreads to bet on and against the same team. You can win both bets if the scoring margin falls in between the two spreads. He said it’s not that hard to go around the state’s prohibition on wagering. "You can place a wager either by driving across the state line, by going to a bookie, by going to offshore betting accounts or finding a buddy who has an app in any one of the 20-something states that allow it in the country and says, ‘Hey, I’m going to Venmo you 10 bucks; can you put down a bet on this game?’ It’s that easy, and so we are leaving money on the table ; we’re leaving our citizens without the necessary regulation to make sure they’re protected. And to me, none of that makes sense," Koenig said, as reported by Spectrum News 1 . The bill has bi-partisan support but received pushback from some republicans who feel it will lead to problems like gambling addiction. Some of the money generated by the proposal would go to gambling addiction programs, and some would also go towards Kentucky’s pension debt. Koenig expects the bill to bring in $22.5 million per year , but he said that’s more of a conservative estimate. Anyone interested in applying for a sports gaming license , which is only available to licensed horse tracks, professional sports venues, or anyone who creates an app through a registered track or professional sports venue, would have to pay an initial $500,000 fee and an annual renewal fee of $50,000. The tax rate on sports bets would be either 9.75% (in person) or 14.25% (online). Cities and counties may impose an additional license or fee. Applicants for an o nline poker license would have to pay a $250,000 initial fee and an annual renewal fee of $10,000. Net poker revenue would be taxed at 6.75% for each vendor. Fantasy contests with 100 or more people would be subject to an initial registration fee of $5,000 and an annual renewal fee of at least $5,000 dollars, depending on how much money is generated. The bill passed out of committee last year but did not receive a full vote in the house. Koenig said he has not heard when it will receive a committee vote this year.
NBA’s Adam Silver On Sports Betting: ‘The Integrity Fee Is Something That We Are Entitled To’ NBA Commissioner Adam Silver went deep on sports betting and data rights at his annual press conference before the league finals. The finals typically bring with them commissioner news conferences for all the major leagues. Earlier this week, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman answered a question from Legal Sports Report with his league’s first extended comments on sports betting and integrity fees. Following is a transcript of Silver’s comments, with some observations weaved in: Adam Silver on sports betting. “Sports betting is already legal in the United States in the state of Nevada and it’s legal in many other countries (where) we do business around the world. We have several so-called integrity provisions in place already — many of them relate to disclosure, as the media well knows — and other controls we have in place to monitor betting lines and monitor betting information.” “The real issue as we move to new jurisdictions that are legalizing sports betting is access to information. That’s one of the things we have sought in model legislation that we presented to now the roughly 20 jurisdictions or so in the United States that are looking to legalize sports betting.” Silver did not expressly discuss the NBA’s preference for Congress to set a national framework for sports betting. Yet this last comment shows why the league long favored federal legislation before softening that language to a “50-state solution” this year. Information on bettors and action key to NBA. “So what we can do is going to depend in large part on the quality of the information we can get from these states. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to know name and social security number for the person placing the bets. Three NBA arguments for integrity fees. “As you know, we’ve spent a fair amount of time over the last several months talking directly to states like Delaware, like New Jersey, West Virginia, New York, Illinois and others that are in the process of passing legislation. One of the issues we had on the table and have been seeking is a so-called integrity fee. And the notion of the integrity fee is that as we’re now dealing potentially with 50 different jurisdictions, all with differing permutations of sports betting law, it’s going to dramatically increase the enforcement costs for the league office.” Let’s get one item out of the way: the integrity fee is not “so-called.” The NBA appeared to help coin the term. The increased enforcement costs continue a consistent NBA line of argument. It’s one of three Silver threw out for public digestion at the press conference. As for the others … “We think the integrity fee is something that we are entitled to, one, because we have the additional costs and also — something that as I’ve said before, we’re not hiding from — that we also think we are due a royalty. And that if the intellectual property that is created by this league — and I know all the leagues support this position, but in the case of the NBA, we will spend roughly $7.5 billion creating NBA basketball this season.” There’s the second one: the NBA is “entitled” to a cut if sports betting relies on the games it puts on. And the third: games are the intellectual property of the league , for which it should receive money. With an enormous media audience at The Finals , Silver tossed out all three lines of logic. How the public and media digest it bears watching. Play that funky music! “And to the the extent that product is then used for casinos, betting parlors to make money on, we feel — just in the same way a musician that receives a royalty for the music that’s being played, we should receive some sort of royalty. So call it a royalty, call it an integrity fee, we will have additional expenses and it’s ultimately our intellectual property, and we think we should be compensated for it.” Most of what Silver said at the presser comes from the NBA’s greatest hits album on sports betting. The musician concept appears to be the league’s hot new single. How Silver’s idea translates to sports betting is murky: a musician gets paid when his or songs are played. Consumers pay the NBA to watch games in person and on TV, which hues to the royalty idea. Sports betting requires games on which to wager, of course. Nevada casinos, however, do not pay the NBA simply for the existence of its games. Why other entities now would need to do so requires more explanation from the league. Will the NBA get integrity fees from anyone? Asked if he expects to get the integrity fee anywhere: “It depends. We’ve had better receptions in certain states than others. There are very strong gaming interests we’ve talked directly to in many states that do significant business through their casinos in those states, and again, their position has been very public — their view is that we are not entitled to that integrity fee. “And my response to those gaming organizations is, if that’s your view, then we will negotiate with you directly because I think many of them desire to get official data feeds from the league. They desire to use our trademarks for placing bets. Some of them desire to have official designations from our league and others, so we will have direct commercial negotiations with those casinos, which to me is not inconsistent in any way with also seeking that integrity fee.” Silver provided a lot to unpack in that answer. Both casinos and many lawmakers express continued opposition to integrity fees . Delaware sports betting will open next week without one and Mississippi sports betting might not be far behind. Whether they make it into New Jersey sports betting law remains in question, but unlikely. The league’s best efforts to reopen the West Virginia sports betting fee-free law flopped in May. Direct NBA negotiations with casinos over data always appeared a more likely path to progress than insertion into legislation. If the league goes that route, success could be easier to come by. Silver, though, wants the fees and the laws , and that could prove a heavy lift. Casino operators agreeing to pay the league twice is as improbable as states agreeing to lessen their revenue without leagues offering value in return.
