College basketball rankings: Kansas has opportunity to pick up a quality win at West Virginia. It's been nearly a month since the Jayhawks won a game against a quality opponent. The top four teams in Saturday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 — No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 2 Baylor, No. 3 Michigan, and No. 4 Ohio State — are all off this weekend. Needless to say, a global pandemic created by COVID-19 is to blame. But Saturday will still provide four matchups between two teams both ranked in the Top 25 And 1. No. 8 Alabama at No. 14 Missouri No. 21 Kansas at No. 11 West Virginia No. 19 Wisconsin at No. 12 Illinois No. 20 UCLA at No. 24 USC. All four games represent big opportunities for each team involved. But you could argue nobody needs a win this weekend more than Kansas, if only because it's been nearly a month since Bill Self's Jayhawks beat a team projected to make next month's NCAA Tournament. Kansas is 2-4 in its past six games with the victories coming over TCU and Kansas State, two schools that are a combined 4-14 in the Big 12. To be fair, the losses are all reasonable, which is why the Jayhawks are still a respectable 6-6 in the first two quadrants, and 12-6 overall, with all six losses qualifying as Quadrant 1 defeats. That's not as bad of a resume as some have made it out to be (even if, yes, it's well below KU's normal standards). But the fact remains that it's been nearly a month since Kansas topped a quality opponent. So recording what would be a fourth Quadrant 1 win at West Virginia on Saturday could help ease concerns. So, it's Friday, and you've made it through the first week of 2021. I have to ask: does it feel any different than 2020 so far? I know it feels different in this newsletter. After limping to the finish line of 2020, we've been on fire with our picks this week. Let's hope that carries through the weekend. As we usually do around here on Fridays, I've got a couple of picks for tonight's action, but that's not all. I mean, the NFL playoffs begin Saturday, and thanks to postseason expansion, there are more games than ever before. One day we'll all look back at the caveman days of the NFL playoffs when the Wild Card round only had two games per day. "Can you imagine?" we'll ask ourselves. "What in the world did people do for those extra four hours each day that there wasn't a football game to watch? It's amazing we've survived as a species being as dumb as we were!" Of course, with more games comes worse teams in the playoffs. I mean, in the NFC, we have a 7-9 team that won its division, and an 8-8 team just snuck in. That 8-8 team happens to be the team I'm going to be rooting for. Because there's nothing I want more than for the Bears to beat the Saints and then get to play the Packers for the third time. Playing the Packers always works out so well for the Bears. Anyway, on to today's reading. Now let's keep this hot streak rolling. All times Eastern, and all odds via William Hill Sportsbook. 🔥 The Hot Ticket. Suns at Pistons, 7 p.m. | TV: League Pass The Pick: Suns Over 111.5 (-110) : Our total is too low for this matchup. The Suns are the better team, as is evidenced by the seven-point spread, but do you know why the Suns are favored by so much on the road? Because they're third in the league in offensive efficiency and ninth on the defensive end. When you're in the top 10 of both categories, you're going to win a lot of games! The same cannot be said of the Pistons, who rank 20th in the league in offensive efficiency and are 29th in defensive efficiency. Instead, I'm going to trust that they'll find plenty of points against this Pistons defense. Team overs have been working well for us so far in the NBA, and I see no reason to change course tonight. I don't hate a play on the Over 216, either, but the Suns team total is the smarter play. Key Trend : The Pistons are allowing 119.1 points per game. Here's what SportsLine is saying about the game: What's the Advanced Computer Model projecting for tonight? It's got a few strong leans. 💰 The Picks. 🏀 College Basketball. Boise State beat Air Force on Wednesday 78-59. Tonight they meet again. Well, I've noticed a bit of a trend in these games. The team that loses the first game tends to improve in the second contest. In particular, with Air Force, it lost to Nevada by 17, and two days later, it beat the Wolf Pack 68-66. Then Air Force lost to Utah State by 35, and in the second game, it still lost but cut the deficit to 19. They've improved in the second leg of their first two series by an average of 17.5 points. If that trend continues tonight, the Falcons shouldn't have any problem covering. Key Trend : Air Force has improved by an average of 17.5 points per game in the second leg of its first two series, which isn't really a trend, but I told you this was more of a gut feel! Rams at Seahawks, Saturday, 4:40 p.m. | TV: Fox The Pick: Under 42 (-110) -- We don't know the status of Jared Goff yet. Obviously, if he plays, it increases Los Angeles' chances of winning the game. Still, whether its Goff or John Wolford, I'm not anticipating this being a high-scoring affair. The Rams have the fourth-ranked defense in the NFL based on DVOA, and while Seattle is only 16th overall, weighted DVOA, which rates recent performance, has them 11th. They've improved as the year goes along. Plus, we can't ignore that this is the third time these teams have met this year. The first meeting was a 23-16 Rams win, and the second was a few weeks ago when Seattle won at home 20-9. The total for that first meeting was 55. The second meeting saw the total come down to 47.5, and the final score was even further below than the first meeting. Well, they've dropped the total yet again, and while it's likely to finish a lot closer to the number this time around, I don't see it getting there often enough. Key Trend : The under is 15-7 in the last 22 meetings, and 2-0 this season. Ravens at Titans, Sunday, 1:05 p.m. | TV: ABC The Pick: Ravens -3 (-125) -- The Titans are a bit of an anomaly. If we look at the 14 teams in the playoffs this year, 11 of them rank in the top half of the league in defensive DVOA. Green Bay finished the regular season just outside the top half at 17th. That's significantly better than Cleveland, which is 25th. Then there are the Titans, who are ranked 29th. Tennessee's defense has been its Achilles heel all season long and now they're facing a Ravens offense that has torn bad defenses apart lately. The good news for the Titans in this matchup is that they're better against the run (16th in DVOA) than they are the pass (30th). The bad news is I don't think it's going to matter. The Ravens are playing their best football of the season at the right time, and are good enough defensively to at least limit the Tennessee offense. The same cannot be said about the Titans. The only way I see Tennessee winning this game is if Baltimore turns the ball over repeatedly, or Lamar Jackson gets hurt. Or maybe Derrick Henry rushes for 250 yards. All of which are legit possibilities, but not the kind that happen often enough to be scared away from the Ravens. Key Trend : The Ravens are 5-0 ATS in their last five as favorites. Bears at Saints, Sunday, 4:40 p.m. | TV: CBS The Pick: Under 47 (-110) -- There are only two ways I see this game playing out. The first is that the Saints blow out a Bears team that backdoored its way into the postseason. After all, the Saints have one of the best defenses in the league, and it looks like they're likely to have both Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas back. That wasn't the case in the first meeting at Soldier Field, when the Saints needed overtime to get past Chicago 26-23. Then there's the Bears defense, which is likely to be without linebacker Roquan Smith, who is a major piece for what they do. In this scenario, I can see the Saints winning by a score of 35-10. The other scenario is the Bears do that thing they do and make a game miserable. They muddy things up and figure out a way to keep it close by not allowing the Saints to put together any big plays, and lean on David Montgomery in the run game on offense. Also, while it feels strange to type it, Mitch Trubisky did not start in the first meeting, and he's an upgrade over Nick Foles. So the Bears offense could be slightly more effective at holding onto the ball. In this scenario, the Bears keep it close, and possibly pull off an upset, but it's a low-scoring slopfest. Both scenarios stay under the total. UFC Fight Night Betting Pick: Timur Valiev vs Martin Day. The UFC has packed up Fight Island and moved the show back to their home of Las Vegas. For how long, though? I am hearing that it will be Summertime before they get back out to Fight Island. For betting purposes, this means a lot of frustration. It sure seems like many of the fights that are getting pulled from the card for various reasons are the ones with the most betting value. This happens in Vegas almost every week there is a show. Whether there is something fishy going on or not, it is far above any of our pay grades so we have to focus on the opportunities we do have. One of those is potentially with Timur Valiev here against Hawaii’s Martin Day. Yes, the betting line is wide but I think we can target a method of victory prop or two that have some solid value. Timur is a very very good prospect for the UFC and they have held off on giving him a step up in competition just yet. He was thiiiiis close to having one fight and one first round finish inside the Octagon. Where would his betting odds be if this was the case? Heck, where are they now? BetOnline has provided the lines for us today and as always. If I find a better line somewhere else, I will make a note of it. If you think this betting line is expensive right now, then imagine if Timur would have got the 1st round win in his debut. They probably would have upped his level of competition anyway but I like him a lot here over Martin Day. The Hawaiin, Day, has yet to have his hand raised inside of the Octagon and is only 8-5 as a professional now. He lost his debut with the promotion to Pingyuan Liu who has since lost two straight fights. After that, he was looking good against Davey Grant before he got clipped and put away in the third round. Then, the scrappy Brazilian Anderson dos Santos took him down and submitted him inside of the first round. Probably not but maybe he just prefers to strike. This preference, though, should be swerved by his coaches in this fight. He works under Mark Henry, Frankie Edgar’s longtime head coach out of New Jersey. Edgar is, of course, fighting in the main event on Saturday against Cory Sandhagen and the betting odds mirror this fight! How crazy is that? The books are trying to bait people to bet on Frankie Edgar. I’m not biting but it is tempting… Can Timur Valiev win a striking battle with Martin Day this Saturday in Las Vegas? Sure. I would favor him probably 67/33 but he has the ability to get this fight to the mat and either cruise to a decision win or send Martin Day off to free agency in style. The Hawaiin Taekwondo fighter lost on his Dana White Contender Series fight back in 2017 but after rattling off a couple of wins, the company gave him another shot in 2018. That was the fight against Liu. Then, he has three fights cancelled and doesn’t compete again until July of last year and then again in November. He is tailor made for Timur to take down and either submit or beat up. I think that is what we will see here. Since the moneyline is too high, what do the method of victory props look like? Here is one I really like. But, of course. Valiev is a striker but so is Day and so was Trevin Jones. Valiev has an excellent head coach who game plans as well as anyone. I expect a grappling heavy game plan from Timur. Will Day accept the loss and just hold on? I doubt it. He has a warrior spirit and he is also fighting for his job after losing his first three inside the Octagon. He knows Valiev is a very talented guy who is dangerous everywhere but he is also aware that his only chance is to allow himself to be quite vulnerable. That is where he makes a mistake, likely giving up his back trying to stand up from the bottom and Valiev slides around the back and finishes the lion kill.
UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov Betting Odds. UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov Odds & Analysis. Date: Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021 TV-Time: ESPN/ESPN+, 8:00 p.m. ET Venue: UFC Apex Location: Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Let’s have a look at this fight from a bettor’s perspective. We got an 8-year age discrepancy between the fighters, but I don’t think that will play into this fight. Alistair Overeem is a bit of a statistical outlier when it comes to age, as he seems to have entered his UFC career’s peak in his last five fights. If not for that controversial last-second KO to Rozenstruik, Overeem would be on a 5-fight win streak, 3 of those wins as an underdog. Historically in the heavyweight division, the underdogs have cashed more often than in any other weight division, giving us some value on Overeem. Alistair has shown his ability to upset the bookies before. Alexander Volkov tends to use his reach to pick his competition apart from the outside and has no problem going to a decision to do so. In the UFC, half of his wins have come via decision, which is quite irregular for a heavyweight. I usually like fighters who are statistical outliers and use it to their advantage in order to win. However, whether it’s a lack of power or simply a matter of game-planning, Volkov’s tendency to drag fights to a decision will not do him well against Overeem. On the contrary. At this point in his career, Alistair’s biggest weakness is facing someone who can blitz him early and shut his lights off before he can settle and get into his rhythm. Once he gets going, his veteran experience and knowledge of the game often earn him the win. Since 2015, Overeem has gone past the first round 9 times and has won 7 of those times. If Volkov wants a drawn-out fight that goes into the championship rounds, he is doing Alistair a favor. The superior grappling of ‘The Demolition Man’ could very well be put on display if the fight goes the distance. The value is on Alistair Overeem as the underdog in this matchup. Overeem vs. Volkov Betting Odds. Volkov remains a healthy -175 favorite over Overeem and we haven't seen much movement in this market after opening on January 13. Overeem vs. Volkov Total Rounds. While most betting shops are offering 1.5 Rounds for this heavyweight clash, BetMGM is providing three different options with adjusted money for the five-round fight. The consensus feeling is that this fight won't make the championship rounds (4th, 5th) and should be over within 15 minutes. Overeem vs. Volkov Betting Insights. Age : Alexander Volkov is eight years younger than Alistair Overeem. Experience : Since 2015, Overeem has won 7 out of 9 of his fights that have gone past round one. Grappling : Overeem is the superior grappler in 3 of 4 statistical categories, only bested in takedown accuracy. UFC Betting Odds History - Overeem vs. Volkov. Alistair Overeem (Last 5) Alexander Volkov (Last 5) Overeem vs. Volkov Fight Breakdown and Pick. The winner of this fight will be a step closer to a shot at the title. While the scheduled bout between Ciryl Gane and Jairzinho Rozenstruik might determine who is the #1 ranked heavyweight, Overeem’s name recognition and -value will probably lead him to a title fight if he beats Volkov in impressive fashion. For Volkov, I see at least one or two more wins on top of Overeem if he wants a go at the champion. Whoever can impose their gameplan on the other fighter will win this bout. Overeem will most likely look to grapple, whereas Volkov will look to keep the fight standing and finish Alistair. On the feet, Volkov has a higher striking differential than Overeem, but on the ground, ‘The Demolition Man’ will definitely be able to have his way with the Russian, granted he gets the fight there. The problem I see for Volkov is that he is the one that has to prevent something from happening. Overeem probably won’t have an issue standing with Volkov, but the Russian will have a problem on the ground with the underdog. I feel Volkov needs to pull a first-round KO out of the hat to win here, and I don’t see that happening based on the fact that he’s only managed one first-round KO in the last 6 years, and it wasn’t even in the UFC. My early lean has me going with Overeem to cash as the underdog against Volkov. UFC Fight Night - Co-Main Event Breakdown. Cory Sandhagen vs. Frankie Edgar. The co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov features a classic veteran vs. up-and-comer matchup. Frankie Edgar, 39, made his UFC bantamweight debut in his last fight, earning an impressive underdog win over #8 ranked Pedro Munhoz. Edgar is 2-3 in his last 5. On the other side of the cage, we’ve got 135-pound striking prospect Cory Sandhagen, who is coming off a second-round KO win over hard-hitting striker Marlon Moraes. Standing 5’1’’ tall, Sandhagen is unusually tall for the UFC’s bantamweight division, and will tower over the 5’6’’ Edgar. A win over Edgar sets up Sandhagen for a bout against the winner of Petr Yan vs. Aljamain Sterling, while a win over Sandhagen throws Frankie Edgar into the title mix in his new weight division. Join me in breaking down the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov, between Cory Sandhagen and Frankie Edgar. Sandhagen vs. Edgar Betting Odds. As expected, Sandhagen is a very large favorite over Edgar who could likely get underdog support from casual UFC bettors just based on his name. Sandhagen vs. Edgar Betting Analysis. The betting line being this wide tells me that bookies and bettors believe that Edgar is on his way out, and I don’t really disagree with that. Edgar is 39 years old and peaked back in 2010 when he captured and defended the lightweight title. Problem is, we are in 2021 now, and I feel like Edgar’s skill set hasn’t evolved since the 2010 era of UFC fighting. Big reach and height advantages for Sandhagen, along with one of the highest striking differentials in the UFC today makes ‘Sandman’ the rightful favorite. My only concern is Sandhagen’s lacklustre takedown defense. His mindset seems to be that he has no problem going to the ground because he believes in his ability to scramble back to his feet. That didn’t work well for him against Sterling, however, Edgar is not the same submission wiz, but can still grind out a lay-and-pray decision if Sandhagen is not careful. Still, I see very few indications that Edgar is a valuable bet, and even at -400 I honestly believe the value is on the 11-year younger fighter, but not H2H. For value, I recommend looking at the Sandhagen by decision lines when they open. Sandhagen vs. Edgar Betting Insights. Age : Cory Sandhagen is 11 years younger than Frankie Edgar. In matchups with an 11-year gap, the youngster wins 7 out of 10 times. Striking Wiz : Sandhagen has one of the highest active striking differentials in the UFC, meaning that he dishes out significantly more strikes compared to what he absorbs. UFC Betting Odds History - Sandhagen vs. Edgar. Cory Sandhagen (Last 5) UFC 250: Nunes vs. Spencer (L) Cory Sandhagen -111 vs. Aljamain Sterling -111. Frankie Edgar (Last 5) Sandhagen vs. Edgar Fight Breakdown and Pick. While it's hard not to root for Edgar as the veteran he is, I can’t see him getting the W over Sandhagen on February 6th. While lackluster on paper, Sandhagen’s takedown defense of 30% does not account for times he’s gotten back to his feet. Edgar can not win this fight by striking with Sandhagen. In order to win on the scorecards, Edgar would need control time upwards of 2.30 minutes in at least 3 of the 5 scheduled rounds. Frankie could very well get the better of Sandhagen early on, but as the fight goes on I foresee panic wrestling from ‘The Answer’, and Sandhagen pulling ahead on the scorecards, utilizing his large striking toolbox. I’m predicting that Sandhagen gets his hand raised against Frankie Edgar, in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov, on February 6th. UFC Fight Night (UFC Vegas 18) Fight Card. 2021 Daytona 500 Odds, Picks & Predictions: 3 Early Bets for NASCAR’s Biggest Race. Photo by Brian Lawdermilk/Getty Images. The new year is finally here, and while that means football season is coming to a close, it’s also a reminder that NASCAR’s season-opening race, the Daytona 500 (Feb. 14 at 2:30 p.m. ET), is right around the corner. Daytona 500 odds are available at most sportsbooks, so it’s time to turn our attention toward motorsports and start building betting cards for NASCAR’s biggest race. With this in mind, here are three drivers I’m locking in right now for the Daytona 500. Daytona 500 Picks. *Odds as of Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. ET. In an event that can be very random, Hamlin has found a way to dominate the Great American Race in recent years. The Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver has won back-to-back 500s and three of the last five. That’s pretty good. And it’s not just Daytona that fits Denny’s superspeedway eye as of late, evidenced by finishes of fourth and first at Talladega last year as well. In fact, here were Hamlin’s finishes at the four superspeedway races last season: first, fourth, third and first, for an insane 2.3 average finish. I’m typically in very little rush to bet Daytona 500 favorites this early, but I can’t find any reason to wait on Hamlin at 8-1 odds right now. I just can’t quit you at superspeedways, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse is the ultimate checkers-or-wreckers driver, a characteristic that often results in wadded-up race cars. Still, I’m not overly concerned about where he finishes because, as a bettor, if he ain’t first, he’s last. Ricky’s two Cup Series victories came at Talladega at Daytona (both in 2017), and he’s shown the speed to win there throughout this career, including last season after switching from Roush Fenway Racing to JTG-Daugherty Racing. Stenhouse won the pole and led the third-most laps in the 2020 Daytona 500, then followed it up with a runner-up at Talladega in June in which he crossed the finish line .007 seconds behind winner Ryan Blaney in a crazy finish. At 20-1, this is a worthy price to add one of the series’ top superspeedway drivers, especially one who will not settle for anything less than a win. Part of being a successful bettor is understanding your flaws, especially the ones that bleed profit throughout the season. My New Year’s NASCAR betting resolution is to stop taking so many longshots at superspeedway races, especially the Daytona 500. Sure, anything can happen in these races and that’s what can be seductive with longshot prices, but the deep sleepers rarely ever take the checkered flag. As a result, I’ll be looking more toward props for my favorite sleepers — follow me on Twitter (@PJWalsh24) for my Daytona 500 props — while avoiding them (hopefully) to win outright. With that said, I’m taking a shot, and a fairly big one, on Chris Buescher at 40-1 odds. Here are the top 10 drivers (sorted by driver rating at the four superspeedway races last season) and corresponding 2021 Daytona 500 betting odds via BetMGM. The list above includes the six drivers with the best odds to win the Daytona 500 and seven drivers at 16-1 or shorter. Kurt Busch, the 2017 winner is next at 20-1, leaving just Buescher (40-1) and Jones (66-1) as the outliers. For those wondering, Jones, who was around 28-1 to win this race last year, switched from powerhouse team JGR to Richard Petty Motorsports in the offseason, explaining the significant drop in price. That list alone illustrates why I’m willing to take a flier on Buescher, but looking at average finish makes this bet even more appetizing. Hamlin and Blaney were the only current Cup Series regulars who finished with better average finishes than Buescher at superspeedways in 2020. So, in Buescher we’re getting a driver … In very fast Roush Fenway Racing superspeedway equipment. Who finished with the sixth-best driver rating at superspeedways in 2020. Who had the third-best average finish at superspeedways in 2020. Harvick is coming off a season which he dominated in terms of race victories – he had a series-leading nine in 36 races. He also gathered 20 top-five finishes. During the regular season and then into the first rounds of the playoffs, Harvick appeared to be the favorite to win the championship. But a rare bad outing at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia in the penultimate round of the playoffs kept him out of the Championship 4. Little has changed for Harvick for 2021. He will be back driving a Ford for powerhouse Stewart-Haas Racing, he will still have Rodney Childress as his crew chief and you can be sure he will still have plenty of swagger on race weekends. About the only change for Harvick and the No. 4 car is that they will have a new teammate in young Chase Briscoe, who is taking the wheel of the No. 14 car that retired Clint Bowyer had been driving. Perhaps no other driver was affected as adversely by the Covid 19 pandemic and the changes it forced upon NASCAR as Kyle Busch. New Jersey senator proposes bill to allow in-state betting on college sports ban. A state senator is attempting to close a loophole in New Jersey’s sports betting regulations that has been more of a nuisance than a disaster. Compared to most states, sports betting in Jersey is pretty efficient. There is some competition in the mobile market, and the brick-and-mortar places upstate and in Atlantic City are decent. They have a problem with seemingly arbitrary limits and general tolerance for professional bettors, and they don’t allow wagering on in-state colleges or college competitions. So it’s not perfect. No betting on college games played at the Meadowlands, Boardwalk Hall, or other Jersey facilities. It’s a nice effort, but sports betting observers say it doesn’t go nearly far enough. There would still be a prohibition on betting on regular-season games. Rutgers football, for instance. “If you’re going to go through the trouble of passing a resolution and having an issue of this magnitude to amend the state constitution, you should go all the way and completely remove the ban on in-state collegiate betting,” said Daniel Wallach, an expert in sports betting law. “More importantly, from a public policy perspective, the state is basically telling its citizens to go and bet these games in the illegal market or in other states. This has stood, in the last three years, an exception to their record of perfection in the rollout of sports betting. It’s the only thing that prevents that state from having an A-plus for how they’ve handled sports betting.” Sarlo’s office did not immediately return requests for comment Wednesday, but he at least cast the first stone. There is no restriction in Pennsylvania against collegiate betting. New Jersey was at the forefront of the fight to end Nevada’s monopoly on traditional sports betting, and the in-state collegiate provision was included in their 2011 bill to make sports betting more appealing to reluctant politicians and residents. It was signed into state law the following year. The federal law overturning Nevada’s dominance toppled in 2018. Wallach and others will point out that many collegiate sports betting scandals have been uncovered by regulated sportsbooks who have noticed unusual patterns in wagering. One provision some states have adapted to mitigate shady behavior is to restrict individual player and team props on collegiate events. “I think New Jersey has always had a case of post-purchase dissonance over this in-state collegiate betting ban,” said Wallach, a co-founder of the University of New Hampshire’s school of law sports wagering & integrity program. “It seems to me the measure would have passed, at least on the public level, with or without an in-state betting ban.” This and that. NCAA Makes Case To Senators To Ban Betting on College Sports. AD warns of hazards on campus from such wagering. A prominent athletic director warned a U.S. Senate committee panel on collegiate sports Wednesday that failure of Congress to outlaw betting on NCAA events across the U.S. would have dire consequences on campuses. Heather Lyke, director of athletics at the University of Pittsburgh, represented the NCAA’s position in opposing state-by-state legalization of sports betting on college contests (while acknowledging that “gambling on professional sports is here to stay”). For the most part, Lyke — testifying remotely from her office due to the COVID-19 pandemic — seemed somehow unaware of the extent of illegal wagering on major college sports for more than a half-century. Pennsylvania legalized sports betting in October 2017 and was the fifth state to allow operators to go live with legal sports betting in November 2018, six months after the fall of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. “The introduction of legal wagering on intercollegiate athletics will have a corrosive and detrimental impact on student-athletes and the general student body alike,” Lyke testified. “Gambling creates pressures and temptations that should not exist.” The latter point is certainly defensible, in the abstract. But Lyke curiously ignored the widely understood reality. Billion-dollar bonanza. American Gaming Association President Bill Miller, the other panelist on the second, 25-minute segment of the two-pronged “Protecting the Integrity of College Athletics” hearing, noted in his written testimony that “anecdotally, we know that collegiate events account for about 30% of the basketball and football wagers placed in the legal market.” That means that even by conservative estimates of the size of the illegal sports betting market nationwide, close to $50 billion already was being bet each year on NCAA sporting events before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 opened the door for such legal gambling. But not so, apparently, in Lyke’s universe. “While currently a spectator’s pride and team spirit might hinge on a win or a loss, if sports betting is permitted, one’s livelihood could depend on the outcome of a Saturday afternoon game,” Lyke told the senators on a panel led by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina). Lyke added there already had been negative social-media messages sent to athletes of losing teams before nearly two dozen states legalized Las Vegas-style sports betting since 2018. “These messages pale in comparison to those that will come when a spectator has bet a relatively large sum of money on the game,” Lyke asserted. “The general student body will not be immune to the detrimental effects” of legal gambling on college sports, Lyke also warned. “It is not unreasonable to foresee students gambling away financial aid or work-study money on ‘the big game.'” Decades of examples of such compulsive gambling by students demonstrate that Lyke’s concern is well-founded. ‘Illegal’ keeps some potential bettors on sidelines. When pressed by Judiciary Committee Chairman Graham on the issue of illegal gambling on campuses, Lyke replied, “I would argue that where you have illegal gambling, certain people are willing to make those bets — but the population of people there is probably much less than when you legalize it. There was one aspect of sports betting that Lyke did seem to grasp. “With the proliferation of online betting, placing wagers at any game at any time is as simple as the click of the button,” Lyke said. “One does not have to walk into the casino or sportsbook of a casino to bet on their favorite college team; they just have to enter a credit card and place the bet online.” Of course, that was true up to almost two decades before the Supreme Court voided the 26-year-old Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 for unconstitutionally “commandeering” states into doing Congress’s bidding on sports betting oversight. Lyke then pointed out that “students may be susceptible to corruption and other abuses by gambling interests who will seek to utilize students as sources of information before placing wagers.” Indeed, that has been the very root of a number of the college basketball scandals that have popped up periodically since the 1950s. Miller noted that most such scandals have been uncovered by Las Vegas bookmaking operators who noticed “anomalous activity” on sometimes relatively obscure games. Miller said that widespread legalization of sports betting should help, not hurt, the NCAA in finding future potential scandals. Prop bets can go too far. Lyke made a valid point about an issue the NCAA brought up two years ago — a potential problem with in-game “prop bets” that athletes can manipulate while knowing that they are not significantly harming their chances of winning the game. But her specific examples — betting on who wins the opening tipoff in basketball, or whether the first pitch to the second batter in the third inning will be a fastball or curveball — are a bit beyond the reality of exactly which wagers tend to be approved and offered. Lyke added that a number of states — including New York and Illinois — allow sports betting on college sports, except for games involving the local teams. In New York, sports betting is currently only legal at four upstate casinos, and not via the internet or on mobile devices. “Ironically, the case for prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate athletics on a national basis is made by the very states that have authorized it,” Lyke said. Graham, who in the past has crusaded for billionaire Republican Party donor Sheldon Adelson’s war against all forms of online gambling, on Wednesday offered a merely perfunctory question to Miller about whether he had concerns about underage gamblers being able to wager online. Finally, Graham told Miller that “we want to join you in putting illegal gaming sites out of business.”
Can Colleges Police Sports Betting? Some Are Trying. Purdue, St. Joseph’s and Villanova have banned students from betting on their schools’ teams, but other universities are seeking more of a middle ground. No one is sure whose approach is right. Oct. 21, 2019. In Mississippi, university officials sent state gambling regulators names for a “watch list” for big bets. Iowa colleges have simply kept teaching their athletes longstanding, narrowly applied rules on sports wagering. And in Indiana and Pennsylvania, some universities flatly banned students and employees from betting on their school’s athletics events. The rapid spread of legalized sports betting, made possible by a United States Supreme Court ruling last year, is prompting colleges and universities to grapple quickly with whether they can, or should, control a lawful activity so explicitly linked to the performances of their students. But as more states have allowed bets and as wagers have soared — there were more than $730 million in sports bets in August, more than double the amount from a year earlier — there is no consensus among universities about how they should respond. And it is unclear whether the initial reactions will stave off any problems that critics fear might come from bets on everything from bowl games to March Madness brackets. “Because these are fuzzy questions, and they're new questions, we’re not asserting that we've got it tacked down in all particulars,” Mitch Daniels , Purdue’s president, said in an interview as university officials labored this month over the precise wording of their new policy. At its release on Friday, it proved to be among the country’s most stringent: a sweeping prohibition on betting on Boilermakers athletics by students, employees and contractors of the public university in West Lafayette, Ind. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has long restricted many people connected to college sports, including players, coaches and organizers, from placing sports wagers or looking to profit from fantasy leagues or basketball tournament pools. Student-athletes, seen as especially vulnerable to manipulation because of their accessibility, age and typically limited financial resources, have been warned for years that they could lose their opportunities to play if they are tied to gambling. As recently as August, with the landscape of legalized betting evolving by the month, the N.C.A.A.’s Board of Governors “reaffirmed its support” of its existing rules. But because those bylaws — which almost a quarter of male athletes defied, according to a 2016 study commissioned by the N.C.A.A. — do not apply to every student or university employee, individual campuses have been moved to make their own rules to keep up with fast-changing circumstances in their states. Consider St. Joseph’s, a Jesuit university in Philadelphia that sits, as its athletic director put it recently, in a “Bermuda triangle of gambling,” with Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey all allowing sports betting. “Everyone has a different policy because everyone has a different state law,” the athletic director, Jill Bodensteiner, said. Some universities said that they had made no substantive changes since the Supreme Court’s decision and instead remained focused on teaching the N.C.A.A.’s standards that forbid sports wagers of any kind. “Concerns and risks associated with wagering on intercollegiate athletics have existed for many years, though the new Pennsylvania law, which we opposed, magnifies the risks and justifies our augmented outreach efforts,” said Powers, who noted that Penn State was considering using a monitoring service to detect troubling betting patterns . Other colleges have already felt compelled to act forcefully. Major universities in Mississippi, a bastion of gambling in the South for decades but a newcomer to legalized sports wagers, took a series of steps (some overt, others more subtle) last year to deter misconduct. Sid Salter of Mississippi State said that schools coordinated “an extensive education and public awareness campaign” for students, employees and fans “to make sure everyone was aware of essential compliance issues.” State officials said that last fall, the schools went further, arranging through the Mississippi Gaming Commission to learn if their athletes or coaches won l arge sums or placed substantial bets at casinos. Of the universities that took specific actions in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Murphy v. N.C.A.A., many opted for internal policies that threatened discipline, sometimes left space for interpretation and seemed, to supporters and critics alike, difficult to enforce. In Arkansas, the state university system approved a policy that barred employees and students who were “directly associated with a team, student-athlete or other participant” in a sporting event from placing bets in some instances. Students could be suspended for violating the policy, and employees could be fired. But the university system did not define a “direct” association, and Nate Hinkel, a spokesman, said it was “evaluated on a case-by-case basis.” Some universities adopted a harder line, drawing interest — and some skepticism, too — from other administrators. Villanova, the Philadelphia university that is home to one of the country’s elite men’s basketball programs, moved last November to forbid employees and students from gambling on athletic events involving the school’s teams. At the time, the university said its aim was to “strike the necessary balance” between the state’s regulations and the N.C.A.A.’s rules. Nearby St. Joseph’s later prepared an interim policy that barred students, employees, trustees and contractors from placing “an otherwise legal sports wager” on any team, event or person affiliated with the athletic department. Bodensteiner, who said no one had been punished under the policy, said she had been especially concerned about overwhelming student-athletes. “These young men and women are under so much pressure as it is,” Bodensteiner said. “Now they’ve got a roommate or a professor or a counselor at the counseling center betting on them?” Purdue now appears to be the first public university to have pursued a policy as unambiguous as private institutions. Daniels, the university president, said that “unease” had led trustees to act in the first weeks of legalized sports betting in Indiana. “It just did not feel consistent with a value set that we think we hold onto here,” Daniels said. When the formal policy was released on Friday, Purdue said restrictions on betting would, among other benefits, shield people from “any inference of profiteering from inside information, exercising undue influence or other improper conduct.” Indiana lawmakers previously rebuffed pleas that college events be off-limits for gambling. Senator Mark Messmer, a Republican who sponsored Indiana’s sports betting law, said he regarded Purdue’s policy as “a very limited end run but with very limited ability to ever enforce it.” “It seems to me like more of a symbolic attempt from the Board of Trustees to make a statement to their faculty and students that they don’t want to see it happen,” said Messmer, a Purdue alumnus who doubted that regulators or casinos would ever make investigative data available to the university. “I don’t see it being a big infringement on the sports betting world.” Daniels, a Republican former governor whose state recorded $35 million in sports wagers in its first month of betting, acknowledged that enforcement would be difficult. “We’re not going to set up a secret police to run around and try to find out,” he said. “A lot of policies here are undoubtedly being breached on a frequent basis. It doesn’t mean that it’s unimportant to have them as statements of principle, maybe of values. When we find a violation, we act on it.” Whether the decision by Purdue, the first Power 5 school to act so aggressively, will ultimately be copied at other universities with influential sports programs is unclear. (The Big Ten, with members in five states that have, or will soon have, some form of sports gambling, declined to comment on any conference-wide plans.) And that may be, college officials said, because of the inherent uncertainty around the subject. In statements and interviews, university after university attached caveats like “at this time.” Bodensteiner planned to attend a campus forum on Tuesday as St. Joseph’s contemplates whether it should adjust its thinking to allow, say, bets on the Hawks if the university’s basketball team reaches the N.C.A.A. tournament. “Sometimes, higher education is not known for a being a really fluid environment,” she said. “But this is one where we have to stray abreast of the issues and be willing to learn and correct, if needed.”

Sports Betting Explained: What’s A Prop Bet? With sports betting becoming more popular by the day, Super Bowl 55 is in line to be the event with the largest volume of wagering in history. It should be noted that sports betting is not legal in every state in the U.S. just yet, but with more and more states adding legal wagering to their docket, the level of interest is sky-high. To that end, we are continuing a series of explainers on sports betting, following up on a general introduction to the space that explains different kinds of wagers, how odds are calculated, and much more. The second installment is timely when considering the Super Bowl as the backdrop, and it centers on the wide world of prop betting. What is a prop bet, exactly? The most common wagers on a sporting event are covered in our general intro, and they are directly linked to the outcome/score of the game. Those wagers include point spreads, over/under totals, and money lines but, again, they are focused on the actual result of the contest in a big-picture sense. Prop bets (or proposition bets) are wagers that are not directly linked to the overall score or outcome. There are many ways to examine this space, but prop bets gained notoriety from the Super Bowl in many cases, with all eyes fixed on a single game and bookmakers looking for creative ways to entice the public into sinking more money into the action. Prop bets are still far less common than standard point spread bets or total bets, but they are gaining steam, especially in the world of offshore betting, and can be a lot of fun. Standard Game Props. At this point in 2021, game props are available well beyond the Super Bowl, but they can be quite simple and also a bit more complicated. One type of game prop would be an over/under listing on the longest pass play of the game (over/under 27.5 yards, for example). That means a handicapper could wager on either side of that number for the longest pass play, and the same applies for wagers like shortest touchdown, longest touchdown, total penalty yardage, and more. That encompasses a great deal of the game prop market, but there are others to consider. For example, a prominent Super Bowl bet is whether the game will go to overtime, with “yes” and “no” offered. These yes/no bets are very easy to track, simply because it is clear whether the event takes place or not. Finally, there are team vs. team wagers that fall under a similar umbrella. Which team will have more rushing yards? Which team will score first? Which team will score last? Which team will kick more field goals? All of these bets could be (or have been) available for any game, with the bettor given the option to choose a side. Player Props. This may be oversimplified, but player props basically encompass any wager dictated by the performances of individual players. For example, a popular Super Bowl bet is which player will score the first touchdown, with sportsbooks offering sometimes long odds on various players, with only one able to cash a winning ticket. This could also be applied to basketball with which player scores the first (or last) point of the game, or to baseball with the first/last/most home runs of the night. Those are broad bets that could pay lofty odds if things break just a certain way, but there are also more common over/under bets. The Super Bowl is, again, a good example here, with the ability to wager on the over/under for passing yards from Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes. Bookmakers build lines for yards (passing, receiving, rushing, etc.), receptions, completions, carries, touchdowns and much more in the football space, with points, rebounds and assists in basketball and hits, strikeouts, and home runs in baseball. This is a more efficient market in recent years, simply because many smart people are now finding value, but these can also be entertaining and a way to track a “game within the game.” Exotics. This is the area where a gigantic game, i.e. the Super Bowl, really shines. One of the more famous examples is a large market on just how long the national anthem will be, from start to finish, before kick-off. Another could be tied to the coin toss, with people able to wager on “heads” versus “tails.” It can even be as weird as tracking what words the announcers say, or what color someone’s shoes are, or whether the Gatorade poured over the winning coach’s head is green, orange, blue, or a different color. Yes, this is hilarious and often weird. Yes, it can also be delightful, but it certainly trends more to the “entertainment purposes only” genre of sports handicapping.
Sports Betting Odds. Sports Betting Odds Explained. Many people don’t know how to read or calculate sports betting odds, so below we have done our best on explaining how betting odds work. The most common type of sports betting odds used in North America are the American style odds which we explain below. American Style Sports Betting Odds. Most online sportsbooks will list their odds in what is called “American Odds”. There are a couple different versions of sports betting odds, but these American Odds are the most common odds used. Reading and understanding sports betting odds can bet a little confusing to beginners, so we have provided an example below using two NFL football teams: American Odds. The number shown in the bracket represents the odds. The American Odds have two components to them, the first being the positive or negative sign, and the second being the number that follows the sign. The next step is figuring out exactly how much the bet pays out, which is where the numbers in the odds come into play. A listed odd with a – sign in front of it, such as the -140 in our example above, shows us how much money you would need to wager in order to win $100. So using the -140, this would show us that you would need to bet $140 in order to win $100 in profits. You can easily substitute the $100 bet for a $10 bet by moving the decimal place over one spot, showing us that you would need to wager $14 in order to win $10 in profits. Examples: Examples: Below is an example of NFL betting odds taken from an online betting site. The great thing about betting online is that the online sportsbooks will do the calculations for you before you place your bet. You can click on the outcome or team you would like to bet on, and then input the amount you wish to wager and it will show you your potential pay out before you confirm your bet. Decimal Style Sports Betting Odds. Decimal style odds are used mostly in Europe, and are pretty easy to understand. To calculate the decimal style odds all you will need to do is simply multiply the amount you wish to wager by the decimal odds shown and you will get your payout. For example it may look something like this: Decimal Odds. Matchup Odds USA 2.40 Brazil 1.55. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on the USA at 2.40 you would simply need to multiply your $10 wager by the 2.40 odds (10 x 2.40) to find out that the payout is $24. It is important to realize that with decimal style odds it includes the amount you wagered, so to find out profits you would need to subtract your wager ($24 – $10) to find out your potential payout is $14 in profits. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on Brazil you would again just multiply $10 x 1.55 to find out that you would win $15.50 total or $5.50 in profits. Decimal style betting odds are very simple to understand, but you won’t see them displayed in many North American sportsbooks. With that said, most online betting sites will allow you to chose the style of betting odds you want displayed, with American odds set as the default.

If you are a novice sports bettor, a sportsbook’s odds board or homepage on a mobile app may look like complete gibberish. In this article, we will get you caught up on all the basic terminology you need to know. In addition, we will use this terminology to explain how to read what you see on an odds board and how to apply this knowledge towards your wagers. Example of a Game on an Odds Board. This is an example of an NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs that once appeared on a sportsbook’s odds board. You will notice the following categories of terms: rotation numbers, point spread, over/under, and moneylines. Let’s take a look at each term individually. Rotation Numbers. Rotation numbers are commonly used at in-person sportsbooks. These numbers are provided for bettors to easily reference their bets when approaching the cashier. Suppose a bettor wanted to wager on the Cowboys spread. They would approach the cashier and say “I will take number 403, Cowboys -8 for [whatever the bet amount].” The cashier would then have the proposed bet on a screen for the bettor to look at, along with the possible payout. If the bettor was satisfied with the bet, the bet is finalized once the bettor hands the cashier their money. Telling a cashier the rotation number of a bet is not absolutely mandatory. One could simply say “I’ll take the Cowboys -8” and the cashier will likely know that the customer is referring to an NFL point spread. However, one cannot assume the cashier is knowledgeable about every sport, so telling the cashier the rotation number makes their job easier. Point Spreads. Over/Under. Over/unders are also referred to as “totals” in the sports betting world. With over/unders, one is not betting on how much one team will win or lose by. Instead, an over/under is a wager on how many points will be scored. Those who bet on the “over 42.5” think the Cowboys and Chiefs will combine to score more than 42.5 points. Those who bet the “under 42.5” think the two teams will combine to score less than 42.5. Notice how with this particular line, there can be no “push” since there cannot be a half-point scored. Moneylines. Similar to point spreads, a moneyline favorite can be identified with a minus sign next to the number while the underdog will have a plus. With a moneyline bet, one is simply betting who will win the game regardless of the margin of victory. The Cowboys have a moneyline of -400. This fact introduces another important sports term called the “vig.” Those who bet the “Cowboys moneyline” would need to wager $400 to return a profit of $100. That same ratio is applied to all betting amounts, so a $100 bet on the Cowboys moneyline would net a $25 profit. Vigs are Everywhere. If the math to figure out how a vig of -110 works is too difficult, the rule of thumb is that sportsbooks take 10% of the winnings of every bet. However, one does not have to be a mathematical expert to be a successful sports gambler. Remember, a cashier at a sportsbook will always show you what you stand to win before you finalize your bet. A number of provinces still do not allow for the placing of parlay bets online, though both Quebec and British Columbia do allow for wagering online via the lottery retailer websites. Change is coming for sports betting in Canada. After spending years being unable to legalize single-game sports betting, Canada appears poised to finally cross that bridge. An effort that began as an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage and provide a different product offering in border cities than was available on the U.S.-side has transformed into a need to remain competitive with the products being offered south of the border and through offshore competitors. If you think you are timing your punches correctly and they still aren't being launched accurately with your own, try pulling your fist back slightly before punching. This will make the punch much more likely to register. Blocking [ edit ] There are two forms of blocking in this game. One blocks shots at your head, and the other blocks shots aimed at your body. To block punches aimed at your face, hold your fists close together and put them in front of your face as a real boxer might do. To block bodyshots, keep your fists tight together but hold them down by your stomach. Dodging [ edit ] Lean your body left, right or back to dodge punches. This can also be done by simply moving the Wii Remote and nunchuk together in these directions if you are not feeling very energetic. The second method is also faster. If you dodge a punch you will often notice that the game slows down briefly and makes a "whoosh" sound effect. This is the indicator that you can throw a counter-punch. If you throw the correct kind of punch during that window, it will deal extra damage. You will know if you made a counter-punch by the loud slamming sound coming from the wiimote speaker. A properly aimed counter cannot be dodged, making it invaluable against skilled opponents. An improperly aimed counter will either miss completely or bounce harmlessly off your opponent's glove. Knockouts (KO) [ edit ] There are basically two ways to score a KO against your opponent. The most common way is by repeatedly knocking down your opponent. Each time they are knocked down, the chance they will get up again decreases, and if they do get up, their maximum health will be two units lower than before. The other way is much faster, but also more difficult. The more punches you land in a row without missing before a knockdown, the less likely they are to get up again. How skilled the computer opponent is depends on your skill level. Two Player mode - Battle against another human player.
