ATLANTIC CITY, Nov. 14 — It was just another Wednesday at the cavernous Poker Room in Atlantic City’s poshest casino, the Borgata. The cocktail waitresses were gliding around in economical black dresses and the dealers were holding court at packed tables. No one was paying any attention to the television monitors tuned to CNN. Had they sneaked a peek, they would have seen a familiar image: the Poker Room. For the better part of the last two years, law-enforcement officials say, the Poker Room has been home to an illegal betting ring on college and professional football and basketball that raked in $22 million, right under the noses of myriad cameras and agents from the Casino Control Commission and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. And on Wednesday, State Attorney General Anne Milgram announced that 23 people — including 4 men with alleged ties to organized crime in Philadelphia and 2 floor supervisors at the Borgata — had been charged with a variety of offenses. In an indication of how complex the operation was, law enforcement officials said that the ring relied on two wire rooms in Philadelphia and involved perhaps hundreds of bettors. They said the ringleader, Andrew Micali, an unemployed 32-year-old from Ventnor with ties to the Merlino crime family, was a regular at the Poker Room. The investigation marks the third time in the last year that state or federal authorities in New Jersey have cracked an illegal sports betting ring. One involved a former National Hockey League coach and player, Rick Tocchet, who later pleaded guilty. Another centered on an Internet gambling ring and ensnared Rudy Garcia, a former assemblyman from Hudson County, who has pleaded not guilty. But law enforcement officials said the announcement was noteworthy because it was the first time they could recall anyone with alleged organized crime ties being charged with illegal gambling in Atlantic City. “They greatly underestimated our vigilance and determination to keep organized crime out of Atlantic City’s casinos,” Ms. Milgram said. Ms. Milgram emphasized that the Borgata’s management had cooperated in the investigation from the outset, and that the betting ring had not compromised any of the legal poker games. “The responsibility lies with those folks who allowed themselves to be corrupted,” said Capt. Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the State Police. “It all comes down to greed.” Law enforcement officials said they began their investigation, called “Operation High Roller,” based on a tip received in March 2006. Relying on video surveillance and other techniques, they determined that illegal gamblers were told whom to place bets with in the Poker Room. The two wire rooms in Philadelphia then handled the bets. The casino employees who participated in the ring ignored exchanges of cash and casino chips to skirt financial reporting requirements, they said. “There were transactions by the defendants using casino chips, in a way that would allow them to hide the proceeds of their criminal activity,” Ms. Milgram said. “Or, to say it more bluntly, taking cash, turning it into chips, washing the chips through some of the process by either betting or being involved with other bettors, and then taking the money, getting it out.” Those who lost, she added, were forced to take out loans at interest rates exceeding 50 percent, violating state law. In all, 5 people were arrested on Wednesday and 18 were issued summonses, on charges of promoting gambling, money laundering and criminal usury. Investigators said they found more than $40,000 in Borgata chips and cash in Mr. Micali’s safe deposit box at the casino, and that they seized gambling records, a laptop computer and a loaded .357-caliber semiautomatic handgun at his home. The state Casino Control Commission is expected to discipline the six casino employees who were charged, and it is likely that their licenses will be revoked, said Daniel Heneghan, a spokesman for the commission. Rob Stillwell, a spokesman for the Borgata, said that the casino had done everything it could to ensure that its gambling operations were not tainted. But Wednesday’s announcement was likely to be a reminder of just how skittish New Jersey has always been about the specter of organized crime in the casinos. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — An illegal sports gambling ring run out of a high-stakes poker room in an Atlantic City casino was busted Wednesday, authorities said, and 18 people were arrested, including four with mob ties. Since March 2006, the ring took in $22 million in bets on college and professional football and basketball in the poker room of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, said New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram. The off-the-books exchanges of cash and casino chips were unraveled only when an informant told authorities what to look for using the casino's eye-in-the-sky surveillance cameras, Milgram said. The suspected ringleader of the operation, Andrew Micali, 32, of Ventnor, is an associate of Philadelphia mob boss Joseph "Skinny Joey" Merlino, according to a New Jersey law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal complaints do not mention any reputed mob ties. Micali was charged with promoting gambling, money laundering and loan-sharking. Three associates of Micali also were arrested. Vincent Procopio, 41, of Brigantine, was charged with promoting gambling. Anthony Nicodemo, 36, and Michael Lancellotti, both of Philadelphia, were charged with conspiracy to promote gambling. "They sought to escape detection by enlisting casino employees in their crimes," Milgram said. "I'm pleased to say they greatly underestimated our vigilance and determination to keep organized crime out of Atlantic City casinos." Twenty-three people in all are charged, and authorities were seeking five on Wednesday. Most were charged with promoting gambling or money laundering. Unlike Las Vegas, Atlantic City has no legal sports book. Authorities said the Borgata cooperated with the investigation and let investigators use casino surveillance video. Borgata spokesman Rob Stillwell said the ring involved "rogue employees." No one was arrested on the casino floor, and the integrity of the casino's operations was never compromised, he said. The casino employees charged included poker room supervisors, dealers and a bartender. The state Casino Control Commission was expected to punish the casino workers, commission spokesman Daniel Heneghan said. The four men with alleged mob ties, along with Borgata supervisor Joseph Wishnick, 42, of Brigantine, were taken into custody Wednesday. Bail was set at $100,000 for Micali and $50,000 for the others. Wishnick was in custody Wednesday at the Atlantic County Jail. It was not immediately clear whether any the others had posted bail or were waiting to be processed at the jail. None could be reached for comment by The Associated Press on Wednesday. The state Attorney General's Office said lawyers had not come forward for any of the 23 suspects. If the charges are proven, the case would be among the most serious mob incursions into the Atlantic City casino industry since the first casino opened in 1978. Milgram said authorities followed the money in the case from the casino to so-called "wire rooms" in Philadelphia. The wire rooms were used to tally the bets and calculate winnings and payouts for the ring. The ring was publicized mainly by word of mouth among illegal gamblers, who were advised whom to see in the poker room to place their bets. Authorities said the ring engaged in "massive money laundering" facilitated by casino employees who would not record certain exchanges of cash and gambling chips. This is a common method of money laundering at casinos called "chip washing," Milgram said. "It involves taking cash, turning it into chips, 'washing' the chips by betting and then turning them in, and taking cash out," she said. Losing bettors were forced to take out loans from the ring at more than 50 percent interest to cover their losses, authorities said. In their search Wednesday, authorities seized more than $40,000 worth of cash and Borgata chips from a safe deposit box Micali maintained at the casino. The state also obtained a court warrant freezing Micali's bank account with more than $200,000 in it. Fear of organized crime led New Jersey to institute tight controls when legal gambling began, but regulations have been loosened over the years. The anxieties were expressed in a now-famous speech by then-Gov. Brendan T. Byrne when he signed the law authorizing casinos on June 2, 1977: "I've said it before and I will repeat it again to organized crime: Keep your filthy hands off Atlantic City. Keep the hell out of our state!" This is the second high-profile sports betting charge in New Jersey in the past two years. It started with an anonymous letter to Plano police. ‪ A Plano undercover officer spent years peeling back the layers of what turned out to be a sports gambling scheme with international connections — and some bettors placing incredible wagers. “Six or seven figures; and obviously we are in the big time here,” said John Bales, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. How big? Authorities confiscated stacks of gold and cash, with one safe containing more than a million dollars, according to investigators. Valuable sports collectibles were seized and will be sold at auction – and expensive real estate, including condos in Las Vegas. “These were pricey, million dollar condominiums,” Assistant US Attorney Andrew Stover told CBS 11 News. The ringleader, identified as Albert Reed, Jr. of Southlake, also owned a 2-million dollar penthouse in Dallas, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. In fact, the whole sports gambling operation was run via the internet from North Texas to virtually every state. The IRS and US attorney joined the probe in 2006. They say Reed was at the top of a pyramid organization and took a cut of every transaction beneath him. In Virginia, the legal online sports betting became available in January 2021, well over a year before the first brick-and-mortar casinos plan to open in the state. Anyone over 21 can join an online sports betting app or website and wager from anywhere within states lines. If this Georgia House bill were to become law unchanged, it would mean folks in the state could wager on professional sports without access to casino gaming or retail sportsbooks. However, the Georgia Lottery Mobile Sports Wagering Integrity Act is expected to change in a variety of ways. The most significant changes will be what you’re allowed to bet on, as states with sports betting usually accept bets for college sports. However, some areas restrict bets on in-state college teams as well as prop bets and in-game bets on all college sports. Georgia House Representative Ron Stephens, one of the most vocal lawmakers in support of Georgia sports betting legalization, claims that sports bettors in the state already place billions in illegal bets. That means all those potential tax dollars are going to offshore sports betting sites or underground bookies, neither of which generate revenue for the state. Major sports betting operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and William Hill US are launching apps and enticing people age 21 and older with deals to sign up. “It's clear to us that there's incredible demand among Michiganders for at least sports betting. But my expectation is that online casino and in due course poker will be equally popular,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. His company's app — previously launched in 10 states — is connected to MGM Resorts, including the Detroit casino and hotel. Greenblatt said the state's 8.4% online sports betting tax is “very sensible,” allowing licensed operators to compete with offshore sites . He said there will be minimal if any “cannibalization” of business from players who typically visit casinos but instead will play on the internet. “ We see an expansion of the market — so new players coming in to enjoy our product,” Greenblatt said, adding that MGM, like other casinos, will incentivize online gamblers to redeem rewards points by visiting onsite. Casinos offering online games like blackjack will pay a tax of between 20% and 28% , depending on their amount of adjusted gross receipts. Net new annual revenues to the state and Detroit , which has commercial casinos, are projected to total $18.6 million and $13.7 million respectively , according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The money will go to the state’s school aid fund, which covers public schools. Municipalities with tribal casinos will receive a portion of tax revenues, too. (Photo by Edward Pevos | MLive) Watching last weekend’s NFL conference championship games and other sporting events was a more enthralling experience than usual for Jack Abate, of Royal Oak. Abate, 31, was one of thousands of Michiganders to take advantage of the highly anticipated launch of online gaming and sports betting in the state. At noon Friday, 10 Michigan casinos and their platform providers went live, offering either online sports betting, online gaming, or both. By all accounts, the first few days were a huge success. “There were no real reports of any outages -- maybe some lag here and there -- but nothing overly out of the norm in that regard. And also you had a great weekend for an opening. You had the conference championship games and you had the added bonus of a high-profile UFC fight (Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor). So all in all, with the exception of maybe starting on Super Bowl Friday or the first round of the NCAA Tournament, you’re not going to get a much better opening slot.” Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director Richard Kalm said revenue and wagering numbers from the opening weekend are not yet available, but there was a high level of activity. Michigan and Virginia both launched online gambling late last week and combined for 7.5 million online gambling transactions across 400,000 accounts, according to data from GeoComply, which provides geolocation tracking services for the internet gaming industry. Michigan and Virginia accounted for 25 percent of the overall volume last weekend across the U.S. market, which encompasses 17 states with legal online betting. With Virginia launching just two operators, Altruda estimated two-thirds of the weekend’s new accounts and transactions were from Michigan. Abate was one of many to partake in the jam-packed sports weekend. He said he signed up with two operators and placed about 10 or 12 bets, wagering on the moneyline and points total for the football games while focusing on props and various boost bets on basketball and hockey games. “It kind of gives you a little bit more incentive to tune into a game that you may not have paid attention otherwise,” Abate said. “I’m not a big fancy guy for basketball, hockey or baseball, but now with online sports betting, it makes it a little bit more enjoyable to maybe turn on a game when any of my teams aren’t playing and sit down and watch maybe root for an over/under, a prop bet or something like that. “Moving forward, I think people are gonna tune in to maybe an offseason sport that they may not be into as much now they can put some money on the line, have a little bit more skin in the game.” Mike Raffensperger, chief marketing officer of FanDuel, which operates an online sportsbook and casino in nine other states, said he is encouraged by the company’s start in Michigan. “Honestly, it was a kick-(butt) weekend,” Raffensperger told MLive. “I think our projections have proven right. Michigan has launched with incredible fanfare. I think we have exceeded our expectations in terms of consumer appetite for both our sports betting and our online casino product.” Raffensperger declined to share specific numbers but said Michigan was “one of if not our most successful state launch.” Penn National Gaming, Inc. which has partnered with Barstool Sportsbook, said on Twitter that it received more than $2 million in first-time deposits from players over the weekend. Meanwhile, BetMGM reported that it had more than 200,000 successful logins by customers and more than 2 million casino spins in the first seven hours of going live. “BetMGM’s launch in Michigan has been our strongest launch yet, by some margin,” BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt said in a statement. “The strength of demand has been impressive in both sports and gaming.” Some of the most popular promotions were near-lock bets some operators were offering. For example, DraftKings offered a prop bet where consumers could double their money (up to a certain amount) if the Pistons made a single 3-pointer in one of their recent games. FanDuel paid more than $1.7 million to Michigan customers on odds boost wins over the weekend, such as doubling the consumers’ money if the Pistons scored more than 10 points in the first quarter. “They made it really fun and easy, whether it was your first time gambling or whether you’re a seasoned guy at sportsbook,” Abate said. “With tailoring things specific to Michigan, like Pistons prop bets or Red Wings, Michigan basketball and all that, I enjoyed that. The boosts made it fun.” The online sports betting rate in Michigan is 8.4% after winnings are paid out, one of the lowest among states with legal sports betting. The tax and payment rate for internet gaming ranges from about 20% to 28%, depending on how much money a casino generates from online gambling. Because of the competitive tax rates in the state, operators are enticed by the market. Kalm said five more operators are expected to receive MGCB approval shortly, giving consumers more options. Overall, Altruda believes Michigan will be a top-five market in the country, along with New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Nevada. He said he expects Michigan to reach a monthly handle of about $500 million, but noted that could vary based on different sports seasons. Online gaming has the potential to bring in tens of thousands of dollars in tax revenue for the state, but Kalm said more time is needed to get an accurate projection. “You’re going to need a longer picture at this,” he told MLive. “It’s a few weeks before the Super Bowl. It was a big betting weekend for the football playoffs, March Madness is coming, so there’s a lot of activity going on. You really have to look at this on a quarterly basis, spread it out a little bit more to see where Michigan is going to be and how they are going to compare to other states and what the actual revenue numbers are. And we don’t have all our operators up yet.” Regardless, launching before the Super Bowl was paramount. “It’s huge in the sense that you’re getting in the largest single betting sports event of the year,” Altruda said. “You’re getting attention, you’re attracting eyeballs, you’re going to get the normal sports bettors, but you’re also going to get the average sports bettors. In November of 2003, this time as a featherweight, he stopped Marco Antonio Barrera in eleven rounds, in a fight where he was virtually dominant. Then came the great fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, for the featherweight crown, and even though he floored Marquez three times in the opening round, thrilling those who laid a price with him in the boxing odds, he let Marquez back into the fight, and in a thrilling affair, the fight was judged to be a draw. Pacquiao wasn't done moving up; he went to 130 pounds but was unsuccessful in his first attempt, being outclassed for the most part by Erik Morales. Since the scandal, Margarito’s power has been noticeably absent and his hand speed more or less disappeared. Margarito stands 5-feet-11-inches tall and has a reach of 73 inches. He’s boxed 297 rounds since 1994 and his current knockout percentage is 55 per cent. Jones is 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch reach and has pretty good power as his current knockout ratio stands at 54 per cent. He has a decent chin as well as he’s been stopped just three times in his 11 losses. Jones has been a tough opponent for everybody he’s faced and he often surprises his opponents with his speed and power. However, his main problem throughout his career has been a lack of consistency. He can ban an elite boxer one night and basically a journeyman or Grade B opponent the next time out. Prediction… Margarito has done okay since his comeback even though he’s lost some power and speed. You never know what to expect from Jones and that’s what makes this a tough prediction. Boxing fans immediately thought back to Margarito’s fight against Cotto and figured Cotto was on the end of the hardening substance in their bout and that’s why his face was cut, bruised, and swollen so badly in their fight. Since Margarito was caught cheating he took beatings from Mosley and was stopped in the ninth round and then Manny Pacquiao in a 12-round unanimous decision, causing many fans to accuse him of cheating in many of his bouts until he was finally caught. Margarito was suspended for a year and Cotto has promised to get his revenge on Dec. 3 rd . However, this fight was close to being called off as Margarito had to pass an eye exam due to a fractured orbital bone that he suffered from Pacquiao. He finally passed it and the bell is set to ring on Saturday night. The first fight was one of the best in recent memory and this one should be even better with all of the storylines and drama that surround it. It’s no secret that these two guys don’t like each other and that’s usually a good sign for boxing fans. The 31-year-old Cotto will enter the ring with a 36-2 record with 29 knockouts while the 33-year-old Margarito comes in at 38-7 with 27 KOs. Cotto’s other loss was a 12 th -round TKO defeat to Pacquiao in 2009. This bout will be fought at a catch weight of 153 lbs. and Margarito has a four-inch height advantage as he’s 5-11 as well as a six-inch reach advantage. Both fighters have a lot to prove here as Margarito wants to show the world that he doesn’t need hardened gloves to beat Cotto while Cotto wants to prove the opposite. Of course, if Cotto beats him in the rematch here most fans will automatically assume Margarito’s gloves were padded in their first fight. Cotto still has to be cautious though and he can’t afford to go all out as soon as the opening bell rings. He needs to take his time and box methodically while going after Margarito when the opportunity presents itself. He can’t afford to leave himself open and needs to keep his emotions in check. Margarito has shown over the years that he can take a punch as well as anybody. His only KO loss came to Mosley. Golf bet big on legalized sports gambling. It’s paying off. On the sacred, storied grounds of Augusta National this week, the Masters will be played with darker foliage, no fans and an omnipresent logo that will get plenty of TV time, further highlighting golf’s headfirst dive into the sports gambling business. Bryson DeChambeau, the tournament favorite, will sport a DraftKings logo on his cap, making him the first player to wear the betting company’s logo in a tournament and the latest sign of golf’s burgeoning relationship with gambling. Betting operators are anticipating a big week. Wagering on golf has exploded in recent months, thanks to expanded legalized betting and a pandemic-inspired spike in golf interest. At DraftKings alone, the sportsbook handle for golf has increased tenfold this year compared with last. “We saw an explosion of interest in getting content and betting on golf because it was all there was,” said Patrick Keane, chief executive at Action Network, a media company devoted to sports gaming. “There was only so much Taiwanese baseball and Russian ping-pong that people could follow.” The proliferation of golf gambling was urged on by the sport itself. When it became clear 2ВЅ years ago that the federal law banning most forms of sports gambling would be struck down, the PGA Tour aggressively began to rethink both its business model and its rule book. While some professional sports leagues were slower to come around, tour officials knew that friendly wagers had long been part of the sport. “The idea of competing in this manner, it is inherent in the game,” said Norb Gambuzza, the PGA Tour’s senior vice president of media and gaming. “It’s not something that we hide from or are reluctant to talk about.” The tour’s plans accelerated when the sports world suddenly stopped spinning in March.
