Ohio Sports Betting Update: Where Things Stand Entering 2021. Zach Bolinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images. Pictured: The Ohio State Buckeyes mascot. Ohio, which seemed on the cusp of legal sports betting just a few months ago, won’t approve a wagering bill this year. After five sports betting hearings, including several in recent weeks, an Ohio state Senate committee didn’t take up a legalization bill last week, effectively ending hopes it would pass this year. The full legislature concluded its 2021 session this week. After a separate bill easily passed the state House of Representatives this summer, it appeared it would be a matter of when, not if, Ohio would approve legal wagering. Instead, the Senate and House could not finalize an agreement that merged their two proposals before the end of a chaotic 2020 legislative session, which saw several lawmakers contract COVID-19 and House Speaker Larry Householder arrested on federal racketeering charges. Backers in the legislature will start up the 2021 session still hopeful they can pass the long-discussed sports betting legislation, but they must do so with many of the same challenges that sidelined the proposal in 2020 and without three of its leading supporters in office. Ohio Sports Betting Background. A large population, a growing casino gaming industry and some of the nation’s most well-known professional and college sports teams made Ohio a sought-after target for legal sports betting since the Supreme Court struck down the federal wagering ban in May 2018. Despite bipartisan, bicameral support, legislation floundered before a House bill that would allow the state’s commercial casinos and hybrid casino-horse track “racinos” to offer retail and online sports bets passed the House easily in May, giving the Senate nearly half a year to either pass their own bill on to the House or reach a compromise on the other legislation. Over the ensuing six months, the Senate’s General Government committee heard largely positive testimony from the nation’s leading gaming stakeholders, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn National (Barstool Sports), Boyd Gaming, MGM and Jack Entertainment, all of which could have access to the Ohio sports betting market through casino partnerships. Meanwhile, leadership in the Republican-controlled legislature, as well as GOP Gov. Mike DeWine, all publicly supported legal wagering. Still, the bill stalled. Lawmakers in the Senate and House differed between oversight by the state gaming commission and lottery, among other differences, but the bigger factor appeared to be legislative momentum (or lack thereof). With the year-round session truncated by the pandemic — and altered by a change in House leadership following Householder’s arrest — sports betting fell to the wayside amid hundreds of other bills considered in 2020. Backers fought until the last few weeks of the session, introducing a substitute amendment to ostensibly appease the casino operators that permitted only one online sportsbook license apiece earlier this month. Despite universal support for the amended proposal in the Senate committee, it still never took up the bill for a vote to advance it before the full Senate floor, effectively killing it for 2020. Possible Next Moves in 2021. Ohio will again be a leading sports betting legalization contender in 2021 as supporters hope last year’s progress can finally help push a bill to fruition. Again, that process may not come easily. Neither of the 2020 Senate bill’s sponsors will return after Sen. Sean O’Brien lost his 2020 re-election bid and Sen. John Eklund was unable to run again due to term limits. House bill sponsor Dave Greenspan also lost his re-election bid, leaving only Rep. Brigid Kelly among this year’s sports betting sponsors returning in 2021. Kelly, and/or a new group of sponsors, will have to start the legislative process over again when the 2021 session begins Jan. 4. The framework laid out by the failed 2020 bills is a good start, but the political obstacles that have stalled passage will likely remain. Meanwhile a new group of lawmakers will have to consider sports betting among a myriad of issues, most notably the state’s continued legislative and fiscal response to the pandemic. Proponents argue retail sportsbooks at state casinos and, more importantly, legal mobile betting options statewide could help ameliorate the state’s daunting $2 billion budget shortfall. Backers also note that by as early as next month, four of Ohio’s five bordering states (Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania) could have legal statewide mobile betting, all of which cater to Ohioans looking to cross state lines to place a bet. However, the few million dollars Ohio could plausibly generate in monthly tax revenues would, in a best-case scenario, be a small piece of the state’s budget puzzle. The more consequential decisions facing Buckeye State lawmakers will define the 2021 session, and it’s possible a comparatively minor proposal could, once again, fall short in the legislature. Despite these obstacles, Ohio will be among the most closely monitored of the dozen or so states seriously considering sports betting next year. Backers are still hopeful the early 2020 momentum in the statehouse could help, finally, legalize sports betting in 2021.
Recapping Busy Start for 2021 Sports Betting Legislation. Lev Radin/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images. Pictured: Gov. Andrew Cuomo. A few weeks into 2021, lawmakers in more than a dozen states have already introduced sports betting legislation or have announced plans to do so. Here’s a state-by-state recap of some of the most important such bills filed during a frantic start to the 2021 legislative session: Georgia. A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the state House of Representatives introduced a mobile sports betting bill last week that would allow at least six individually branded online licenses under the purview of the state lottery. Status: The bill has not been assigned yet to a committee but it is being championed by Rep. Ron Stephens, who chairs the House Economic Development & Tourism Committee. That means it should at least get a serious look. Look Ahead: Georgia came surprisingly close to passing legal sports betting last year, backed by Republican fiscal conservatives and the state’s professional sports organizations. However, any gaming bill still faces opposition from religious and social conservative organizations and lawmakers. The back-and-forth between these factions of the GOP could determine sports betting’s 2021 hopes. Connecticut. After years discussing legal sports betting, Connecticut finally seems on the verge of legal wagering legislation passing into law. Status: A bipartisan, bicameral bill with 17 sponsors — and the backing of Gov. Ned Lamont — was filed last week and now awaits further action in the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Security. Look Ahead: The bill offers few details beyond approving the state’s two gaming tribes to open retail and online sportsbooks, as well as online casinos (the state lottery would also be able to expand its offerings). Significant work is required before this bill could pass but the fact so many lawmakers are on board, as well as the tribes, gives online sports betting and casino gaming a great chance to pass, even if it looks like there may be limited wagering options. Missouri. Lawmakers have already introduced six sports betting bills, meaning the Show Me State will once again consider legal wagering, even though significant logistical and political hurdles remain. Status: Bills have been introduced in both the House and Senate but only one has been assigned to a committee. Look Ahead: Missouri lawmakers must weigh sports betting against an ongoing legislative fight over video lottery terminals, which would have a far larger financial consequence than even online sportsbooks. Lawmakers must consider the casino industry interests while also determining if the state should regulate thousands of unlicensed “grey” gaming machines that are already in existence, legalizing new machines or banning them outright. They also will have to do so remotely, at least for this week; the 2021 legislative session has been suspended due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Kentucky. Rep. Adam Koenig is once again spearheading mobile sports betting legislation, this time with 16 co-sponsors. But after a similar 2020 bill faltered following a promising start, this year’s legislative session leaves little wiggle room for what appears a long-shot effort. Status: This year’s bill hasn’t been taken up by a committee yet but assuming it advances as its counterpart did in 2020, the real question remains if it will get a vote before the full House floor. Look Ahead: Kentucky gaming bills always face tough odds in a state with strong anti-gambling sentiment but this year, lawmakers are more focused on restoring historic horse racing terminals — and, more so, a major budget crunch execrated by the COVID-19 pandemic. With an already truncated odd-numbered legislative session to begin with, sports betting may struggle to gain much traction in Frankfort. New York. Assemblymember J. Gary Pretlow and Sen. Joseph Addabbo have introduced identical bills in their respective chambers that would allow up to 14 online mobile operators as well as betting kiosks at professional sports stadiums and off-track betting venues. Status : Both bills could see votes in their respective gaming committees as early as this week, but that vote isn’t as important as a budget proposal expected from Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the coming days. Look Ahead: Cuomo surprised the gaming world earlier this month when he came out in support of legal online wagering but just as quickly angered stakeholders when he said he wanted only one operator. A press statement released last week indicated the governor may support a multi-operator model, but it will have to come with the backing of lawmakers already looking to advance a proposal of their own. The fate of New York online betting depends on finding an agreement on either a multiple operator or single operator model. Cuomo’s draft budget could go a long way toward that solution. South Dakota. After voters backed a 2020 ballot measure to legalize sports betting last fall, lawmakers introduced follow-up legislation in January that would lay out key regulatory and taxation details for retail sportsbooks in the historic gaming town of Deadwood, as well as Native American casinos. Status: The bill in South Dakota has been assigned to the Senate State Affairs Committee and could be discussed as early as this month. Look Ahead: Passing a retail sports betting bill seems like a safe bet in 2021. Online sports betting is the bigger question. Though gaming is only allowed in Deadwood, some mobile betting backers believe online wagering could be permitted statewide if the computer servers are physically within Deadwood limits. Though it would mean far larger revenue potential, it’s a logistically, politically and possibly legally more difficult endeavor, and the initial bill’s lack of mobile betting authorization indicates it may not even be considered in this year’s session. Massachusetts. Lawmakers discussed a handful of sports betting bills in 2020, including one sponsored by Gov. Charlie Baker, but elected officials couldn’t reach consensus despite bipartisan support. The General Court is set to take up wagering bills again in 2021, but some of the logistical hurdles remain. Status: Rep. Bradford Hill introduced a trio of mobile sports wagering bills last week, and more are set to follow in the Senate (and possibly the House). With the state’s year-long session just beginning, additional legislation to follow and more pressing budget concerns to consider, it could be a while before these specific proposals see much momentum. Look Ahead: Massachusetts, which has increasingly embraced gaming in recent years as competition for gambling dollars grows in other New England states, has frustrated the sports betting industry with its failure to advance legal wagering despite the latent political support. With statewide, legal wagering already in Rhode Island and New Hampshire (and likely in Connecticut) there’s more motivation than ever to pass a bill. Politicians still must work out operator access, college betting legality and a host of other issues they’ve struggled to reach consensus on in recent years. Other States. Several more are poised to introduce sports betting legislation in the coming weeks, while others with legal wagering already are working on growing their betting options. Legislation Pending: Maryland is all but guaranteed to take up fleshed-out legislation later this year after voters overwhelmingly backed a 2020 referendum that legalized sports betting. Texas, Minnesota and Arizona are among the next wave of states that could also see legal sports betting bills in 2021. Expanded Options: Officials in Oregon, Washington and Virginia have filed bills that would increase the number of legal sportsbooks in their respective states. Additional sports betting bills could face political obstacles, but it’s nevertheless a sign of political interest for expanded markets.
3 Signs That You Are Addicted To Sports Betting. Many people suffering from a gambling addiction feel alone. Perhaps you think that no one could possibly understand what it’s like to be you. However, you are not alone and others know exactly what you are going through. This feeling is so common that the mental health field has a name for it – gambling disorder. Psychology Today’s website estimates 3.5% of the American population have gambling disorder [1] – and that’s just in America. There are many misconceptions about compulsive gambling. The biggest is that only people of weak character become gambling addicts. The fact is that gambling addiction is a mental illness. Mental illness can happen to anyone. If anyone reading this wonders if he or she may be addicted to sports betting, check for these three signs. 1. Betting Becomes Your Whole World. Is having a wager now and then a sign of addiction? Not when it is just a few times a year or even once a week. Psych Guides describes gambling [2] to the gambling addict as being “compelled” to keep on gambling, even if there is no chance of ever recouping the cost of bets. Some addicts purposefully lose their winnings in bad bets because the urge to bet is stronger than even the urge to win. The gambling addict does not manage to bet every day but wants to. Life becomes finding money to make a bet and making the wager. Everything takes a back seat to the wager – job, school, family, friends, reputation and health. 2. Chasing the High. No one wakes up one day and thinks, “I’ll become an addict.” Becoming an addict often happens involuntarily. Just why some people can have a bet and not become an addict while others do is unknown, so it is difficult to prevent. Right now, the focus in the mental health field is on treating addictions and not pointing fingers except at one thing – chasing the high. The “high” is not always a nice sensation. It is often just a release of tensions. For example, you have seen what smokers are like when they cannot have access to their cigarettes. They are the definition of the word tense. The only thing that can calm them down and get them back to “normal” is by smoking. This is what happens to gambling addicts too. Instead of taking that first drag, they make a bet in person or online. 3. Money For Nothing. The most tragic sign of sports betting addiction is how the addict finds ways to get money for the next wager. This time everyone connected to the addict becomes affected. The Mayo Clinic states that people suffering from gambling disorder will lie and steal from anyone and anything to get the money. [3] If you have borrowed a lot of money from family and friends that you can never pay back then you are suffering from a gambling addiction. If you are not eating regularly, going to the doctor or paying your bills because that takes money away from your gambling, then you definitely have a problem. Gambling takes over your life like a puppeteer moves a puppet. Another problem is that it often takes larger and larger wagers or more wagers per day or session to get the same high that just one wager used to give. This is similar to what happens to people taking drugs from the benzodiazepine family like alprazolam. The body gets used to the drug so the patient needs to take higher and higher doses until there is a crisis. In Summary. There are many sports betting websites that make you want to get into betting after learning how easy it is to bet. If the three signs of a gambling addiction sound like you, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. The bad news is that gambling disorder is a serious mental illness that could take control of your life. The good news is that gambling disorder is treatable through a combination of medications and therapies.
Sports Betting Tips For Beginners – A Trusted Guide For First-Time Bettors. Ever walk into a casino sports book and feel like you’re looking at the mission control of an alien spaceship? It can be an overwhelming experience as a first-time bettor, especially if you don’t know what the numbers on the digital boards mean. All you know is that you’re confident this team is going to beat that team and you’d like to lay down some money on it. Well, that’s called betting the moneyline. Like any hobby, sports betting is one of those activities with its own language, set of best practices, and house rules. Rookies have to learn what all of this entails, often from a friend who is already confident in their knowledge. Once you learn a handful of sports betting tips for beginners, you’ll feel confident placing a bet on a legal sports gambling app like the one from BetMGM or strolling up to a cashier to wager on a game or team you like. Similar to our guide to NFL betting tips , we wanted to put together a little piece that explains some of the basic things you need to know about sports betting before putting your hard earned cash on a game. Sports Betting Tips For Beginners. How does a spread work? What’s a moneyline bet? What is the “juice”? When you bet a game with a spread, you’ll notice that most of your bets will say -110 or -120. That means that you need to risk $110 in order to win $100. This is called the “juice” or the “vig”. This is essentially how the casinos make their money. What’s a parlay bet? A parlay is a bet where you group together a bunch of bets, but must win all of them in order to cash the ticket. These bets can be fun, and depending how many bets you put in, can offer a huge payoff with very little cash to risk. Below is a table that shows general odds on parlays if you are betting regular -110 spreads. This chart is based on risking $100. Remember though, while four teams may hit for you in your five team parlay, that one loss makes the entire bet a loser. So choose carefully! Have multiple places to bet. The odds on bets are not necessarily the same from sportsbook to sportsbook. The Chiefs in the example above may be a 9.5 point favorite on one book, but only a 9 point favorite on the other. That’s a pretty important thing, as if you bet the Chiefs -9.5 and they win by 9, you lose your bet. But if you bet them at the other book at -9, then you would have pushed, and gotten your money back. Always look at multiple sites and get the best line possible! Stay within your means. We are betting on these games to be entertained. If you go on a losing streak, it happens to everyone. Don’t get out of control and start doubling up, trying to get your losses back. Bet the games to have some extra fun, but don’t go over your head! Where should I bet? Find reputable books to bet on, ones that are approved by your state. The great thing about these books, is they are always looking to get new customers, and offer some great promotions – like this $500 deposit match from BetMGM ! Before signing up, make sure you do a quick google search on that specific site, there are usually some great deposit bonuses available that will get you some extra money to place on some bets. The BroBible team writes about products and services that we think you want. Occasionally, we write about items that are a part of one of our affiliate partnerships and we will get a percentage of the revenue from sales.

Sports Betting Tips: How to Read Gambling Odds. April 2, 2020 by Evan Petty. What are the odds? Have you stopped by Cappers Picks today to use our Sports Betting Tips from the experts at Cappers Picks? Here, we are going to clarify how to read gambling odds and calculate payouts so that even a beginner can bet with confidence. Sportsbooks list odds or payouts one of three ways: in decimal format, in what is known as “American”, or as a fraction or ratio. It’s important to know exactly how to read all three so as never to be cheated. How to Read Gambling Odds: Decimals. Decimal format has become more widespread because of its simplicity. The number next to a bet is how much a winning stake will multiply by. So, for example, a winning bet priced at 2.00 means the bettor doubles his or her stake. If he or she bet $100, he or she would, of course, get the original $100 stake back, plus another $100 ($100 x 2.00 = $200 total return, original stake included). Decimal odds must be larger than 1.00, which would imply no winnings. The occasional confusion with decimal format is that it calculates the total ticket, including the original stake, while the other two formats are based on winnings. To some, this is more intuitive. A winning stake priced at 3.00 means tripling one’s money. Of course, decimals aren’t often whole numbers. A winning stake priced at 1.65 means the bettor gets his or her money back and wins another 65 percent of that original stake ($100×1.65=$165 ticket — $65 in winnings, plus the original stake). How to Read Gambling Odds: American. American format is based on $100. The odds will either begin with a plus or a minus. A plus represents an underdog, or “plus money” return, while a minus represents a favorite that offers a potential profit smaller than the stake itself. The number after a minus represents how much much be staked in order to win $100. The larger the number, the heavier the favorite. A -600 favorite requires the bettor to risk $600 to win $100 for a ticket worth $700. If it’s a minus payout, divide 100 by the number. So that -600 payout would be 1.167 in decimal form (100/600=1.67) How to Read Gambling Odds: Fractions. Fractional odds are more traditional but gradually disappearing in favor of decimal format. Perhaps the math is just too tough for the everyday bettor to figure nowadays. The denominator (that’s the one on bottom) in the fraction represents the stake; the numerator (on top) represents the winnings , not the total ticket amount. Example: 3/1 odds (perhaps shown as 3:1) means a bettor wins three times as much as he or she stakes. A $50 bet would win $150 for a total ticket worth $200. The denominator can be another number, though. A 5/2 payout means for every $2 wagered, a bettor would win $5, on top of the $2 return for the original stake. A $100 bet would win $250 for a ticket worth $350. Sports Betting Tips. What do you think of our article How to Read Odds ? Comments are welcome below. CHECK OUT MORE SPORTS BETTING TIPS HERE. п»їHow to Read Betting Odds. If you’re new to the world of sports betting, one of the first things you’ll need to do is figure out how betting odds work. At a quick glance, betting odds can be quite intimidating to first-time bettors, and you may find yourself asking “how do betting odds work?” That’s where Compare.bet can help; we’ve taken it back to the basics to explain betting odds and how they work. Odds Converter. What are betting odds? The first step to understanding betting odds is appreciating what they do. Betting odds simply indicate the likelihood of an event and the return you’d get if you did make a wager on the result. Betting odds may be displayed in three different formats at US sportsbooks and online and mobile sports betting platforms: American odds, fractional odds and decimal odds. Different formats don’t mean different odds; it’s simply a different way of presenting them. This isn’t as complicated as it might sound and, by the time you’ve read our guide to betting odds, you’ll be an expert. American odds. Let’s consider a real-world example to understand how American odds work in action: When it comes to calculating the return from a bet made using American odds there are two different formulas that can be used: Calculating negative odds: (100/Odds) x Stake = Profit Using the example above: (100/190) x $100 = $52.65 Calculating positive odds: Odds x (Stake/100) = Profit Using the example above: 170 x ($100/100) = $170. When looking at American odds, it’s important to remember that the results of some matches have a points spread attached to them. This applies to a variety of sports including NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB games. When a point spread is attached to a set of odds it means that for the bet to be successful the team must вЂcover the spread’. This means that the team you are betting on must win or not lose by a predetermined margin of points. Fractional odds. Displaying odds in a fractional format is more common in overseas markets, such as the UK, than at US online sportsbooks, but it’s useful to understand them nonetheless. Fractional odds are some of the most simple to understand, as they present your potential winnings as a fraction of the money you stake: while the denominator represents the amount bet, the numerator is the amount your stake will yield in a winning bet. For example, odds of 1/1 mean you’d get a return of $20 for a winning $10 bet. Want a real-life example? Making a $10 winning bet on an NBA game priced at 5/1, would net you $60 in total. You can use the following formula to calculate potential returns with fractional odds: Decimal odds. The decimal odds format, also known as European odds, represents the multiple of your stake that you will get back for winning a bet. While these are more common at overseas betting exchanges, you may see these at US betting sites. For example, betting on a market priced at 2.5 means you would win two and a half times your stake if your bet were to win. This means you’d win $2.50 for every $1 you wager. Another example of decimal odds in action would be betting on NHL game with odds of 9.0. A $10 stake on odds of 9.0 would earn a total payout of $90 with $80 being won from the sportsbook and your initial $10 stake being returned. You can use the following formula to calculate potential returns with decimal odds: Calculating total payout: Odds x Stake = total payout e.g. 9.0 x $10 = $90 To calculate profit: (Odds x Stake) – Stake = profit e.g. (9.0 x $10) – $10 =$80. Comparing different types of odds. Whichever format odds are written in, they all have an equivalent in another format. While some sites, such as William Hill’s Jersey sportsbook, allow bettors to change odds formats, it is useful to understand how to calculate odds between formats. Not only will this help you understand your potential return, but it also makes it easier to compare betting odds across sportsbooks. Fractional odds to: Decimal odds to: Fractional American (decimal odds-1) and round to nearest integer = fractional odds (decimal – 1) x 100 = American odds (3.75-1=2.75) = 2.75/1 or 11/4 (3.75 – 1) x 100 = 275. Positive American odds to: Negative American odds to: US sports betting markets. We’ve explained betting odds, but what markets are these set on? As the US sports betting industry continues to grow, so does the selection betting options, or betting markets, at each site. Odds will vary between these markets, and even between the same markets at different sports betting sites. Not quite sure what every US sports betting market means? These are the most popular: Straight bet. A straight bet is a single bet on the outcome of a game or sporting event that is determined by a money line or point spread. A futures wager is a bet placed on the outcome of an event in the future. For instance, you can place a wager on the winners of the NFL season which doesn’t even begin until next year. A parlay wager is a single bet that is linked with two or more wagers. In order to win a parlay bet, a bettor must win every wager in the parlay. If a bettor loses one wager in the parlay then they will lose the entire parlay bet. Parlay bets tend to have much higher odds than other bet types. Teaser bets are usually available for basketball and football events. A teaser allows bettors to combine their bets on two different games and adjust the point spreads for the two games. However, the better will see a lower return in the event that their teams win. Round robin. A round robin is essentially a series of parlay bets. For instance, a round robin made up of three teams will consist of three two-team parlay bets. Propositions. Propositions bets are sometimes referred to as “prop” bets. These bets focus more on the outcome of a certain event happening during a sports game such as “which team will score the first touchdown?” or “how many field goals will team x score?” It’s up to you to compare betting odds and pick your betting market. If you’re new to sports betting, we’d recommend sticking to вЂsafer’ bets with lower odds until you get to grips with how it works exactly.

If you are a novice sports bettor, a sportsbook’s odds board or homepage on a mobile app may look like complete gibberish. In this article, we will get you caught up on all the basic terminology you need to know. In addition, we will use this terminology to explain how to read what you see on an odds board and how to apply this knowledge towards your wagers. Example of a Game on an Odds Board. This is an example of an NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs that once appeared on a sportsbook’s odds board. You will notice the following categories of terms: rotation numbers, point spread, over/under, and moneylines. Let’s take a look at each term individually. Rotation Numbers. Rotation numbers are commonly used at in-person sportsbooks. These numbers are provided for bettors to easily reference their bets when approaching the cashier. Suppose a bettor wanted to wager on the Cowboys spread. They would approach the cashier and say “I will take number 403, Cowboys -8 for [whatever the bet amount].” The cashier would then have the proposed bet on a screen for the bettor to look at, along with the possible payout. If the bettor was satisfied with the bet, the bet is finalized once the bettor hands the cashier their money. Telling a cashier the rotation number of a bet is not absolutely mandatory. One could simply say “I’ll take the Cowboys -8” and the cashier will likely know that the customer is referring to an NFL point spread. However, one cannot assume the cashier is knowledgeable about every sport, so telling the cashier the rotation number makes their job easier. Point Spreads. Over/Under. Over/unders are also referred to as “totals” in the sports betting world. With over/unders, one is not betting on how much one team will win or lose by. Instead, an over/under is a wager on how many points will be scored. Those who bet on the “over 42.5” think the Cowboys and Chiefs will combine to score more than 42.5 points. Those who bet the “under 42.5” think the two teams will combine to score less than 42.5. Notice how with this particular line, there can be no “push” since there cannot be a half-point scored. Moneylines. Similar to point spreads, a moneyline favorite can be identified with a minus sign next to the number while the underdog will have a plus. With a moneyline bet, one is simply betting who will win the game regardless of the margin of victory. The Cowboys have a moneyline of -400. This fact introduces another important sports term called the “vig.” Those who bet the “Cowboys moneyline” would need to wager $400 to return a profit of $100. That same ratio is applied to all betting amounts, so a $100 bet on the Cowboys moneyline would net a $25 profit. Vigs are Everywhere. If the math to figure out how a vig of -110 works is too difficult, the rule of thumb is that sportsbooks take 10% of the winnings of every bet. However, one does not have to be a mathematical expert to be a successful sports gambler. Remember, a cashier at a sportsbook will always show you what you stand to win before you finalize your bet. Sports Betting Odds. Sports Betting Odds Explained. Many people don’t know how to read or calculate sports betting odds, so below we have done our best on explaining how betting odds work. The most common type of sports betting odds used in North America are the American style odds which we explain below. American Style Sports Betting Odds. Most online sportsbooks will list their odds in what is called “American Odds”. There are a couple different versions of sports betting odds, but these American Odds are the most common odds used. Reading and understanding sports betting odds can bet a little confusing to beginners, so we have provided an example below using two NFL football teams: American Odds. The number shown in the bracket represents the odds. The American Odds have two components to them, the first being the positive or negative sign, and the second being the number that follows the sign. The next step is figuring out exactly how much the bet pays out, which is where the numbers in the odds come into play. A listed odd with a – sign in front of it, such as the -140 in our example above, shows us how much money you would need to wager in order to win $100. So using the -140, this would show us that you would need to bet $140 in order to win $100 in profits. You can easily substitute the $100 bet for a $10 bet by moving the decimal place over one spot, showing us that you would need to wager $14 in order to win $10 in profits. Examples: Examples: Below is an example of NFL betting odds taken from an online betting site. The great thing about betting online is that the online sportsbooks will do the calculations for you before you place your bet. You can click on the outcome or team you would like to bet on, and then input the amount you wish to wager and it will show you your potential pay out before you confirm your bet. Ready To Start Betting? MyBookie and BetNow are my two favorite sportsbooks and make betting very easy. You will also get a Free Money Bonus at each sportsbook if you follow either link above. Decimal Style Sports Betting Odds. Decimal style odds are used mostly in Europe, and are pretty easy to understand. To calculate the decimal style odds all you will need to do is simply multiply the amount you wish to wager by the decimal odds shown and you will get your payout. For example it may look something like this: Decimal Odds. Matchup Odds USA 2.40 Brazil 1.55. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on the USA at 2.40 you would simply need to multiply your $10 wager by the 2.40 odds (10 x 2.40) to find out that the payout is $24. It is important to realize that with decimal style odds it includes the amount you wagered, so to find out profits you would need to subtract your wager ($24 – $10) to find out your potential payout is $14 in profits. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on Brazil you would again just multiply $10 x 1.55 to find out that you would win $15.50 total or $5.50 in profits. Decimal style betting odds are very simple to understand, but you won’t see them displayed in many North American sportsbooks. With that said, most online betting sites will allow you to chose the style of betting odds you want displayed, with American odds set as the default.
Sections. Advertisement. What do sports betting lines mean? Share this article. If that sounds like you, we’re here to assist you. If you’ve stared at a board at a sportsbook or just seen spreads and moneylines on the Internet and been utterly confused, don’t worry. It’s not just you. Those numbers can be confounding. But hopefully, once you’re done reading this, you’ll completely understand how they work. As you prepare to dive into the world of sports betting, here’s a breakdown of how the lines work, starting with … Spreads. It would be really easy to bet on a game if you could put money on a heavy favorite to win. That’s where point spreads come in. Let’s look at an example: In this case, you can bet on either two outcomes: you can put money on the Eagles to win the game by 4.5 points OR MORE, which makes them the favorites. Or you can bet that the Giants will either win or lose by LESS THAN 4.5 points. They’re the underdogs. Now, sometimes the spread “moves” during the days leading up to the game. Perhaps the Eagles’ spread ends up being -3.5 (in which they must win by 3.5 points or more to give you a victory in your bet). Your bet all depends on whichever spread you bet on, whether it was when the Eagles were favored by 4.5 or 3.5 points. If you ever see “PK” or “pick” next to a team, it means there’s no spread and you can bet on who will win, no matter what the score is. Moneylines. Let’s take that same example above but use moneylines: The team with a minus symbol is the favorite, and the number is how much money you would need to bet to win $100. In this case, you would have to bet $200 on the Eagles in order to win an additional $100. Note that you can bet any amount you want, but those numbers are always calculated and posted the same way, either in how much money you would need to wager to win $100 or how much money you could win by wagering $100. If you’re betting on something like the team who will win the Super Bowl in the future, you might see it look like this: New England Patriots — 3/1 Baltimore Ravens — 5/1 Kansas City Chiefs — 8/1. If you were betting on the Patriots and their 3/1 odds, you would win $3 for every $1 you spend. So if you bet $50 on the Pats and they ended up winning the Super Bowl, you’d win $150 (plus your original wager) back.
Sports Betting Explained: What’s A Prop Bet? With sports betting becoming more popular by the day, Super Bowl 55 is in line to be the event with the largest volume of wagering in history. It should be noted that sports betting is not legal in every state in the U.S. just yet, but with more and more states adding legal wagering to their docket, the level of interest is sky-high. To that end, we are continuing a series of explainers on sports betting, following up on a general introduction to the space that explains different kinds of wagers, how odds are calculated, and much more. The second installment is timely when considering the Super Bowl as the backdrop, and it centers on the wide world of prop betting. What is a prop bet, exactly? The most common wagers on a sporting event are covered in our general intro, and they are directly linked to the outcome/score of the game. Those wagers include point spreads, over/under totals, and money lines but, again, they are focused on the actual result of the contest in a big-picture sense. Prop bets (or proposition bets) are wagers that are not directly linked to the overall score or outcome. There are many ways to examine this space, but prop bets gained notoriety from the Super Bowl in many cases, with all eyes fixed on a single game and bookmakers looking for creative ways to entice the public into sinking more money into the action. Prop bets are still far less common than standard point spread bets or total bets, but they are gaining steam, especially in the world of offshore betting, and can be a lot of fun. Standard Game Props. At this point in 2021, game props are available well beyond the Super Bowl, but they can be quite simple and also a bit more complicated. One type of game prop would be an over/under listing on the longest pass play of the game (over/under 27.5 yards, for example). That means a handicapper could wager on either side of that number for the longest pass play, and the same applies for wagers like shortest touchdown, longest touchdown, total penalty yardage, and more. That encompasses a great deal of the game prop market, but there are others to consider. For example, a prominent Super Bowl bet is whether the game will go to overtime, with “yes” and “no” offered. These yes/no bets are very easy to track, simply because it is clear whether the event takes place or not. Finally, there are team vs. team wagers that fall under a similar umbrella. Which team will have more rushing yards? Which team will score first? Which team will score last? Which team will kick more field goals? All of these bets could be (or have been) available for any game, with the bettor given the option to choose a side. Player Props. This may be oversimplified, but player props basically encompass any wager dictated by the performances of individual players. For example, a popular Super Bowl bet is which player will score the first touchdown, with sportsbooks offering sometimes long odds on various players, with only one able to cash a winning ticket. This could also be applied to basketball with which player scores the first (or last) point of the game, or to baseball with the first/last/most home runs of the night. Those are broad bets that could pay lofty odds if things break just a certain way, but there are also more common over/under bets. The Super Bowl is, again, a good example here, with the ability to wager on the over/under for passing yards from Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes. Bookmakers build lines for yards (passing, receiving, rushing, etc.), receptions, completions, carries, touchdowns and much more in the football space, with points, rebounds and assists in basketball and hits, strikeouts, and home runs in baseball. This is a more efficient market in recent years, simply because many smart people are now finding value, but these can also be entertaining and a way to track a “game within the game.” Exotics. This is the area where a gigantic game, i.e. the Super Bowl, really shines. One of the more famous examples is a large market on just how long the national anthem will be, from start to finish, before kick-off. Another could be tied to the coin toss, with people able to wager on “heads” versus “tails.” It can even be as weird as tracking what words the announcers say, or what color someone’s shoes are, or whether the Gatorade poured over the winning coach’s head is green, orange, blue, or a different color. Yes, this is hilarious and often weird. Yes, it can also be delightful, but it certainly trends more to the “entertainment purposes only” genre of sports handicapping.
Horse Racing Payout Calculator. Going About the Payout The most important thing about horse racing betting is the payouts, for at the end of the day its not enough to pick the right horse, but also wager on the right horse, meaning that a punter realizes when a horse is short priced or shows a decent price as a favorite and places a wager on that horse in order to collect bigger payouts. Many punters use a horse racing payout calculator so that they can keep good track of their stakes and possible payouts. This use of a horse betting calculator has improved the way punters approach horse racing betting. Horse Racing Payout Calculator Since nowadays many punters wager on more than horse and more than one race, the need for a calculation process that would concentrate all the wager and output the costs and payout figures has risen dramatically and created the need for a horse racing calculator to that just that and calculate the payout. The horse racing payout calculator comes in various ways depending on the wager type placed on the horse or horses. In the case of straight wagers, the horse racing payout calculator simply takes the odds, presented in decimal or fraction, and uses it together with the stakes laid on the wager to calculate the payout. This horse racing payout calculator usually holds a fraction converter for converting odds. Another type of horse racing payout calculator is the exotic wager horse racing payout calculator. This one is a bit tricky since the exotic payouts such as Trifecta or Superfecta derive from a separate wagering pool so there isn’t a way to know or calculate the payout until the payout is due to happen once the races are over. However, an estimation on the pool sum can be made by the horse racing payout calculator in order to give the punter a slight clue on the payout. Calculate Onwards There is one approach in horse racing betting that has benefited from the development of today’s horse racing payout calculator and it’s referred to as let it ride. Let it ride means keep rolling the winning money onto other horse wagers in an attempt to strengthen the bankroll. This approach is very difficult to handle if not using a proper horse racing payout calculator. The horse racing payout calculator aids the punter with making decision by simplifying and clarifying all the possible scenarios in the let it ride scheme. The use of the horse racing payout calculator has contributed significantly to the variety of wager placing and different wager approaches by automating the calculation process thus making life a lot easier for the punters.
How to Calculate Horse Racing Betting Odds and Payoffs. It's surprising at how many people make bets on horse races without the slightest understanding of the tote board. While all of those numbers on the board may seem imposing, the odds and payoffs are actually pretty easy to learn. And by doing so, you will be able to make and calculate better bets. Reading the Win Odds. The easiest information on the board is the win odds quoted on each horse. They don't tell you what the horse will pay, but the amount of profit you will get and the amount you have to bet to get it. For example, 6-5 means you will get $6 in profit for every $5 you wager, while 20-1 means you get $20 in profit for every $1 you wager. In the latter example, a bet of $2 means you would get $42 back for a winning wager. Payoffs use the actual odds and are rounded down to the nearest nickel or dime, depending on the rules at that track. This rounding is called breakage. Calculating the Win Odds on a Horse. If you want to calculate the exact win odds on a horse, you will need to use a couple of other figures from the tote board: Total win pool Amount bet on that horse. The total pool is all the money bet on all the horses to win, but it is not the amount that will actually be paid out to the holders of winning tickets. Before the track pays off the winners, they deduct the "take," which is generally between 14 and 20 percent and is different in every state. This money goes to pay state and local taxes, payment for the horsemen, expenses at the track, and the track's profit. To calculate the exact odds on your horse, just subtract the take from the total pool, then subtract the amount bet on your horse to give you the amount of cash to be paid out. Divide that figure by the amount bet on your horse to get the exact odds. This figure will always be rounded off to the nearest dime (usually) or nickel, as mentioned previously, before the payoffs are calculated. Here is a simple example of win odds calculation: Total pool: $900 Amount bet on horse No. 1: $300 Take amount: 15 percent $900 minus 15 percent equals $765 $765 minus $300 equals $465 $465 divided by $300 equals $1.55. Round this amount off to $1.50 for breakage and you get odds of 1.5-1 or 3-2, as it would normally be written, which yields a payoff of $5 on a wager of $2. Payoffs for $2 Win Bets. Since most tracks have a $2 minimum bet, below is a handy chart to look up the payoff for a $2 bet at various odds. Remember, your actual payoff may differ from this chart, as the odds on the tote board are rounded off, so 2-1 odds on the tote board may actually be 1.9-1 or 2.2-1.
Horse Racing Betting Guide: How to Calculate Betting Odds and Payoffs. Contrary to popular belief, most people who bet on horse racing have no idea what's going on or what the best way to make money is. They generally stick to a favorite number, or color of the saddle cloth, or horse color for that matter, and hope to get lucky. If it's your lucky day, sure, you may win a few bucks, but it won't break the bank. While I understand that most people view horse racing - a sport that has been around for centuries - as leisure activity and a day to get out in the sun for good entertainment with good company, that shouldn't mean it's okay to have little to no idea of how to actually bet the races. Free $60 in Member MLB Picks No Obligation Click Here. Horse racing has its own terminology and odds system that can really throw the casual horse players for a loop. The average person may not know what a furlong is, or the where the quarter pole is or what a closer is. Hell, they may not even know how much they stand to get back if their bet does in fact win. Well, I'm here to help. The purpose of this article is to educate you on how the odds works and the potential payouts of standard bets. If you want to familiarize yourself with the horse racing terminology, you can click here . Understanding Horse Racing Odds. The "tote" board is the massive jumbotron screen that is usually located in the infield of the racetrack that displays several important notes, such as post time, minutes to post, changes, scratches, pool totals, and, most importantly, the odds. The most important part of understanding the odds is understanding that they ca decrease or increase within a matter of minutes and that you won't exactly know for sure how much you are going to win should your bet be graded as a winner. However, there are ways to educate yourself and prepare yourself for the possibly payout in order to determine if your bet is worth making or not. For starters, you must understand that the win/place/show pools are subject to a 14-20 percent take out from the track in order to pay taxes, expenses, horsemen and the track's profit. To calculate the exact odds of your horse, you must simply subtract the take from the total pool, then subtract the amount bet on your horse, which will give you the amount that is to be paid out. Then you divide that number by the amount of money bet on your horse and boom…you have odds for your horse. For example, if the total pool is $900 and the take out is 15 percent. The math would look like this: Total Pool: $900 Amount bet on horse #3: $300. This means that your horses odds are 1.55/1, which is the same as saying 3/2 - a much more common way of wording it. Horse Racing Payout Chart. So now that we know how to calculate our horse's odds manually, instead of looking at the giant tote board that gives us update odds every minute, we must now figure out how much we stand to win if we bet two dollars on a horse to win at various odds.
A new 33-page report from JPMorgan breaks down how media companies can cash in on the rise of US sports betting. Here are the key takeaways and likely winners. This story is available exclusively to Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. US media companies have yet to unlock the potential of sports gambling, JPMorgan said in a report. The Wall Street firm said the expansion of online betting is creating new opportunities for sports media. The report also outlined how sports-media brands like ESPN, CBS Sports, and Sinclair could cash in. Visit the Business section of Insider for more stories. Sports betting is still a largely untapped opportunity for US media companies, according to analysts at the Wall Street giant JPMorgan. Media firms from NBCUniversal to Barstool Sports have leaned into the US's emerging legal sports betting industry over the past few years. Some inked six-figure marketing deals with betting operators, as in the case of NBCUniversal, or landed lofty valuations on the backs of casino investments, like Barstool. But a new report by JPMorgan outlines the bigger opportunity for media investors that's being created by the expansion of online gambling. It also breaks down the media companies best positioned to cash in on the sports-betting rush, including ESPN and Sinclair Broadcasting. JPMorgan estimates the US sports-betting industry brought in $1.5 billion in revenue in 2020, and will generate $9.2 billion by 2025. Roughly half that sixfold growth could come from US states that are yet to roll out online sports betting, including New York, the nation's largest media market, and California, home to Hollywood and Silicon Valley. "Media networks are only scratching the surface when it comes to the value they can drive for betting platforms," JPMorgan analysts wrote in the February 3 report. JPMorgan expects sports-media networks to lean into online gambling in a few ways: Media networks can use their brands to lend credibility to gambling operators and funnel potential gamblers their way. This thinking has driven many of the sports-betting and media tie-ups we've seen so far, particularly among regional casino firms like Penn National Gaming that want to reach a national audience. Daily-fantasy-sports sites FanDuel and DraftKings — US sports betting's early market leaders by wagering volume — may also pursue more partnerships like these if Penn and other smaller competitors successfully steal market share through media deals. "To the extent smaller operators though can successfully leverage media for market share, we think this will put more pressure on the entire industry to pursue similar arrangements," the report said. Broadcasters could integrate betting into live sports. This gets to the holy-grail opportunity for media companies, which is to not only to take advertising and affiliate dollars from operators, but to use betting to bolster engagement and viewership of sports. "The greatest opportunity for sports networks, however, is to integrate betting content where it can reach the largest and most engaged audiences, which is during live games or immediately preceding them on studio shows," the report said. Networks could create custom gambling events. The sports industry turned to virtual simulations and other types of matches to keep fans, and gamblers, engaged when the pandemic temporarily halted sports last year. Broadcasters could learn from that moment and create events designed to attract betting action. "While the nature of a public telecast makes betting exclusivity difficult, sports networks could sell sponsorship and integration rights for these unique events, and even provide exclusive streaming video into platforms," the report said. Of course, that also depends on the leagues embracing betting. Some like the NBA and PGA Tour have leaned in while the NFL and others are coming around to gambling. The report also breaks down the most likely winners among JPMorgan's portfolio of sports-media stocks:

Sports Betting: Media’s Growing Interest in Legalized Gambling. Todd Longwell. Latest. While the global pandemic has been a frequent disruption to pro sports since nationwide lockdowns brought many industries to a standstill in the spring of 2020, statewide legalization of sports betting in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s approving decision in May 2018 has continued. As of February 2021, legal sports betting is up and running in 20 states and the capital, with Virginia becoming the 20th state to unveil its operations last month. Another five states have legalized sports betting and are working to make it operational in the near future. What’s next for the frontier of legalized gambling in the U.S. is the focus of “Sports Betting,” the third in-depth examination of the sector from Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP) following our launch report on the subject as well as our Variety Thought Leader report, the latter of which was our first exploration of the new betting market coming together. The 20-page report highlights the companies from the media and betting sectors joining up to take advantage of the new opportunities afforded by the legalization of sports betting. Now that the stability of sports broadcasting as a market driver for media companies has been compromised by COVID-19, resulting in a pronounced shift from MVPD subscriptions to streaming, media companies that once relied on steady revenues from sports rights deals struck with their owned networks are turning to sportsbooks to offset losses. The forecasts for where the market cap of sports betting will rise continue to change frequently in scope. While more modest estimates expect the market to reach close to $8 billion by 2025, analysts continue to rapidly revise their expectations, with one Morgan Stanley watcher projecting sports betting and internet gambling could reach a combined $15 billion by that time. As coronavirus remains volatile and the reality of consumers reassembling the cable cords they’ve cut remains unlikely, the investments in and attention given to sports betting only stand to expand. If you’re in a state that has yet to hop on the bandwagon, you can bet that won’t be the case for much longer. Read on to learn about: A state-by-state look at the status of legal sports betting, and which states stand to become major challengers to the betting markets in Nevada and New Jersey. Which media companies are partnering with sportsbook operators in rapid succession, as well as how the largest players in gambling are handling this new economic territory. The potential dangers posed by the legalization of sports betting, given several ways in which gambling captivates consumers and athletes alike.

Excel Sports Bet Tracking Spreadsheet 2021 (Free!) Ever wondered how you are actually doing in sports betting? Just like tracking your finances can be an eye opening experience (I spent how much at restaurants last month?!), tracking your bets can shed some light on your performance. Download the free sports bet tracking spreadsheet below to get started (available for both Excel and Google Sheets): Bet Tracker Spreadsheet: Instant Insights. If you want to measure your performance and see where you are succeeding and failing, you need to track it. With this free tool, you can see your performance broken down by various dimensions. Have a great ROI on betting NBA 2nd halves? Getting solid closing line value on NFL point spreads? This spreadsheet allows you to answer questions like this and more. How to use the spreadsheet. While the spreadsheet is pretty straightforward, I’d like to walk you through how it works. How to track sports bets. Everything lives in the “Bet Log” tab. This is the only place information is manually entered. Once the data is entered there, all other tabs will automatically populate. In the “Bet Log” tab, blue columns are required while red columns are optional. The more information you input, the more useful the spreadsheet will be. Entering things like the closing line, while slightly annoying, will also be the most important to your success. How to analyze performance. Each tab will have different graphs and tables that show your performance. The beauty of this is that you can filter the data by any dimension you like. Any yellow cell is an “input” cell that can be changed. All of these are dropdowns that are pre-populated based on the information you enter in the Bet Log. How to add more leagues and teams. To add new leagues and teams, you will do so in the “REF” tab. This tab holds all of the lookup information for the dropdowns throughout the spreadsheet. Again, the cells available to modify are in yellow. You can add the following dimensions: Leagues (ex: WNBA) Teams (ex: Chicago Sky) Tags (ex: 2nd half) Bet Tracker Spreadsheet Metrics. Deciding what to track is important in determining how you measure success. The spreadsheet tracks the following key metrics: Closing Line Value. Closing line value (CLV) is a measure of how much better or worse the odds you bet at were compared to where they closed. If you believe the markets you are betting into are efficient (NFL point spreads, MLB moneylines, etc.), then CLV is a great predictor of long term success. All you need to do is input the odds you placed your bet at as well as where the odds closed. Preferably you use a market making sportsbook like Pinnacle to decide what the “true” closing line was. Profit. Profit is about as simple as it gets. Are you making or losing money? While this is the “bottom line”, surprisingly it isn’t always predictive of long term success. Still, you will obviously want to see how much money you have made or lost. This is what most people tend to look at. It is a measure of how profitable you are relative to how much you are risking. While at the end of the day, the money in your pocket is what matters, this metric focuses more on results rather than process and is a measure of efficiency. ROI isn’t as predictive of long term winning as CLV, but is useful to track to see where you stand. This one is simple, yet will likely give you insights into where you are putting your money. If you have a model, does it consistently value the Dallas Cowboys differently than the market? Thus making many of your bets on the Cowboys? Analyzing your risk by league/team/bet type can give you these types of answers. Bankroll. Bankroll will track our running total of how much money you have in your accounts across all sportsbooks. You can also see this trended over time to help you see any changes in your betting strategy and how that has affected your bankroll. It is very useful to see, at a glance, where your money lies. Is 95% of our bankroll at FanDuel? Maybe you should shift some to DraftKings. Bet Tracker Spreadsheet Dimensions. Having these metrics available is important, but insights really come from slicing the data by different dimensions. League/Team. Tracking your performance by league or team can give you clues into where your strengths or weaknesses are. Do you watch every second of every New York Knicks game? Think you have an edge on Knicks games? You can find out using the spreadsheet. Same goes for leagues. Do you follow NFL closely but use strictly numbers for NCAA Basketball? Compare the performance of the two and see what’s working. Bet Type. Looking at performance by bet type can also shed some light on your process, especially if it is model driven. Track your performance by the following bet types: Spread Moneyline Total Prop Future. You can also use the “Tag” field to designate special types of bets. For example, if you want to see your performance on moneylines for NBA 2nd halves, you would put “2H” (or something similar) in the Tag field and “moneyline” in the bet type field. A common way to analyze performance is to look at metrics trended over time. Look at any of the metric/dimension combinations above trended over any time period you’d like. Want to see your performance over the last 14 days? Or how about the last 12 weeks? Both are possible here. Google Sheets Sports Betting Tracker. The sports betting tracker is also available on Google Sheets. While the features are the same as the Excel file, Google Sheets has some notable benefits: Available/online at all times Can enter bets on your phone using the Sheets app You don’t need to be at a computer to enter your bets Google Sheets auto saves any changes Allows multiple users to be in the sheet at the same time and make changes.
The 9 Best Offshore Gambling Sites of 2021. You should avoid offshore gambling sites if you can bet with a legal United States gambling site instead. Offshore bingo, casino, poker, and sports betting sites are legal in their country of origin, but the United States has a different opinion. That said, the probability that you’ll face any kind of legal issues when betting at offshore gambling sites is minimal. You should be more worried about having trouble depositing and withdrawing money from these offshore sportsbooks. Below, I offer some recommendations about which offshore sportsbooks might best suit your needs. But I remind you to take everything you read online with a grain of salt, including this. My List of the 9 Best Offshore Gambling Sites for 2021. Here’s my list of the 9 best offshore gambling sites for 2021, in alphabetical order. I don’t recommend any one site over any other, necessarily. Further on in this post, I’ll share some thoughts on which sites are better or worse than others for specific types of gamblers. Betonline Bookmaker Bovada GT Bets Intertops Mybookie BetDSI YouWager. I provide detailed reviews below, but first, I should discuss the legalities involved with gambling at offshore sportsbooks. Categorizing Online Sportsbooks and Offshore Gambling Sites. You could categorize online sportsbooks in multiple ways, but the broadest categories I can think of are 2: Legal, regulated online sportsbooks Offshare, unregulated online sportsbooks. If you live in a state where you can bet on sports online, you should always choose one of the many reputable sportsbooks operating in the United States. In many states, though, if you want to bet on sports online, you must do business with a neighborhood bookie or an online gambling site. I recommend trying a local bookie if you can, but those are guys are operating on the outskirts of the law, too. If you’re determined to gamble at an offshore sportsbook, stick with the ones recommended in this post. You’re unlikely to face legal trouble betting at an offshore book, but it’s not impossible. I’m not a lawyer. I do have dozens of friends who have bet on various sporting events at different offshore sites, and many of them have been happy with the experience. 5Dimes. If you’re looking for that kind of action, you can find it at other online bookmakers, but Bovada offers a much more robust set of games. They also might have the best overall reputation of any of the sites listed here. GT Bets. If you’re looking for the best turnaround times for withdrawals, try GT Bets. They’re well-known for their fast turnaround time on customer withdrawals. This is one of the newest sites on the list, having launched in 2011. They do have low betting limits, though, so if you’re a high roller, you might want to pass on GT Bets and consider one of the other properties listed here. Intertops. If you’re looking for the sportsbook with the best reputation for honoring withdrawal requests and not having outstanding customer service issues, try Intertops. Intertops is one of the oldest offshore gambling sites in the business. They were founded in 1998. They also offer some of the best casino and poker games of any of the sites on the list. Bovada is probably the only comparable site in that respect. Mybookie. If you’re interested mostly in live betting and/or prop bets, try Mybookie. They’re one of the newer books listed here, and they have a relatively high rollover requirement on their deposit bonuses. MyBookie is probably better for low rollers because the biggest deposit you can make there is $25,000 — but that’s only for Bitcoin users. If you’re using MasterCard or Visa, your maximum deposit is $1000. BetDSI. If you’re looking for a site that will accept a large deposit from a new gambler, try BetDSI. If you use Bitcoin, you can deposit between $25k and $50k. Check with customer service there for details. The odds aren’t as good at BetDSI as at some other sites, and here’s something else you might have to deal with there: If you’re winning consistently, you might become ineligible for their ongoing bonuses and promotions. YouWager. If you’re looking for great perks and promotions, try YouWager. They’re one of the best offshore betting sites for bonuses and ongoing rewards. They also have a great mobile interface. The company is based in San Jose, Costa Rica. They cater to a mostly US audience. How to Choose an Offshore Gambling Site. You should put some effort into choosing an offshore gambling site. Read some reviews, check out some player forums, and think about what your goals are at the site you’re thinking about signing up with. Don’t forget that you’re looking for a trustworthy site. In this industry, that’s relative, but some sites are better than others. Every betting site on this list is different from every other betting site on this list. They almost all offer different bonuses and set different odds for various bets. They also usually have differences in terms of which banking methods are available. Some of them just offer sports bets, while others also offer casino games and/or poker. Things to Consider When Making Your Decision. Here are some things to look at and think about when deciding where to sign up: Which sports can you bet on? What kind of customer service do they have? How can you deposit and withdraw funds? What are other bettors on the internet saying about them? What kinds of bonuses do they offer? In some respects, offshore gambling sites are often similar, but they have major differences as they relate to all of the above factors. You should make sure you understand which of those criteria are important to you and decide accordingly. What Are Your Goals? Do you just want to bet on football games each week? How about getting the best odds on multiple sporting events? Is that important to you? Do you want to make exotic bets and parlays? These are just a few of the questions to ask yourself before making your decision. If you go into the decision-making process blindly, without any thought to what you’re hoping to experience, you’re going to make a mistake when choosing from the offshore gambling sites above. Finally, have an idea of what your risk tolerance is like. Finally – What You Really Need to Understand about Offshore Gambling Sites. I want to suggest again that if you can play at a licensed online sportsbook headquartered in the United States, never sign up for any of the offshore gambling sites available to you. Use caution with any offshore sportsbooks you do business with, too. Make sure that you’re not betting money you can’t afford to lose. And spend a little time investigating the reputations of the sites you’re considering before making that first deposit.
п»їSuper Bowl 2021 expert picks, odds, how to watch, live stream: Best bets against spread, more. Here's where our experts are leaning heading into Super Bowl LV. The moment has finally come: Super Bowl LV is here. It'll be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing a rare home game as they take on the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs with the winner hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. For the Buccaneers, they find themselves back at Raymond James Stadium after winning three road playoff games in a row, including a victory in the NFC title game against MVP candidate Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. As for the Chiefs, they took down arguably the hottest team in football in the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game and are now looking to become the first team since the 2003-04 Patriots to win back-to-back titles. Super Bowl LV is almost here, and you can watch it for free on the CBS Sports App. Here, we're going to dive into all the different betting angles that this game has to offer and tell you our experts' take from a gambling scope. We'll also get an assist from our friends over at SportsLine, who have put together a fantastic and in-depth guide to all the Super Bowl LV player props. We will highlight a few below, but check out the full 26-page guide here. Are you ready for Super Bowl LV? More importantly, are you ready to make some money? Let's get after it. All NFL odds are via William Hill Sportsbook. How to watch. Date: Sunday , Feb. 7 | Time: 6:30 p.m. ET Location: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Fla.) TV: CBS | Stream: CBS Sports App. Chiefs at Buccaneers spread picks. "For most of this season, this Kansas City team didn't look as dominant as it did last year. But the Chiefs amped it up big time against the Bills. When Patrick Mahomes is cooking, they are almost impossible to stop. We know the Bucs and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles love to blitz, but that's suicide against Mahomes, who is the best in the league against the blitz. Injuries to both starting tackles for the Chiefs could mean less blitzing is needed, but I still think the Bucs will be true to who they are, which is an attack defense. That could and should mean a lot of big plays. -- Pete Prisco on how Kansas City edges out a 35-30 win over the Bucs. "The only thing more impressive than Andy Reid off the bye is Patrick Mahomes off the bye. In his career as a starter, not only is Mahomes 7-0 coming off a bye, but the Chiefs have averaged 35.7 points per game in those seven wins. In Mahomes' career, the Chiefs have also averaged 33.3 points per game when playing a team for the second time during a season. I think what I'm trying to say here is that the Chiefs are going to score a lot of points and I'm not sure the Buccaneers are going to be able to keep up. The Chiefs have a chance to become the NFL's first repeat champion in 16 years and I think they're going to pull it off. " -- John Breech, who is 16-2 picking Chiefs games this year -- on why he likes them by a touchdown against Tampa Bay. In his bold predictions piece for Super Bowl LV, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin has Tom Brady and Mahomes combining for 800 (!) yards and six touchdown passes. To read the rest of Cody's bold predictions (plus a prediction for this game), click here. "While the rare home-field advantage should help the Bucs, they also have a few intriguing trends leaning their way. Teams entering the Super Bowl with a worse record than their opponent have won 10 of the past 12 games. Tampa Bay went 11-5 over the regular season while K.C. claimed the No. 1 seed in the AFC at 14-2. The Chiefs had a tremendously successful season in terms of their actual record, but they went 8-10 ATS, which is currently tied for the second-worst cover percentage entering the Super Bowl. Teams who have previously entered the Super Bowl multiple games below .500 ATS lost (1997 Packers, 1979 Rams). " -- Tyler Sullivan explains why he likes the Buccaneers to edge out a 33-27 victory. SportsLine's legendary handicapper Hammerin' Hank Goldberg enters Super Bowl LV on a 51-34 record on his NFL best bets over the past year-and-a-half. For this matchup, he has three best bets that he is coveting, including the "huge factor" why the Chiefs will not win this game. To find out what that is along with his other best bets for Super Bowl LV, head on over the SportsLine.

After a three-card stint on “Fight Island,” the Octagon returns to UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, this Saturday (Feb. 6, 2021) with a pivotal Heavyweight clash in tow. In UFC Vegas 18’s main event, the venerable Alistair Overeem puts his two-fight win streak on the line against perennial contender Alexander “Drago” Volkov. Down at 135 pounds, former Lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, looks to make it two straight at Cory Sandhagen’s expense and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner, Macy Chiasson, faces Marion Reneau. It’s a fine return to action after two weeks away, and one we can profit from. Here’s how: UFC continues its live events schedule from Las Vegas on Feb. 6 with its “Overeem vs. Volkov”-led fight card available to stream RIGHT HERE — don’t miss a single second of face-punching action! Up Next! вЂReem Team Heads Back To Vegas! What Went Wrong at UFC 257 ? Too many eggs in one painfully inconsistent basket. I really should have known better than to trust Khalil Rountree, even against the likes of Marcin Prachnio. In my defense, the article came out before his weight cut issues came to light. It’s a damn shame about Dan Hooker, though. It still shocks me that Michael Chandler was able to floor him with one punch when Dustin Poirier carpet-bombed “The Hangman” to no effect. I’m slapping an extra hypothetical $300 onto the hypothetical money pile. Let’s turn this around . UFC Vegas 18 Odds For The Undercard: Predictions! UFC Vegas 18 вЂPrelims’ Preview - Pt. 1. Predictions! UFC Vegas 18 вЂPrelims’ Preview - Pt. 2. Thoughts: As one-sided as it is, this undercard is full of bargains, namely Timur Valiev, Lara Procopio and Youssef Zalal. Valiev was almost even money against initial foe Julio Arce, and while -335 is a far cry from -125, he’s still worth an investment. The guy’s still an incredible fighter despite that debut loss, and Day has dropped three straight. Valiev has the kickboxing skill to keep up on the feet and is by far the better wrestler, making him a safe investment. Molly McCann’s defensive wrestling has failed her in both of her Octagon losses, and she’s largely had to rely on her offensive wrestling against low-level Flyweights in her wins. Not only is Procopio significantly superior on the mat, but she’s a skilled enough striker to hold her own a weight class up against Karol Rosa. She’s fefinitely a solid underdog investment. Seung Woo Choi has fought two quality UFC opponents (Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker) and one very, very bad one (Suman Mokhtarian), The quality duo combined to land 10 takedowns on him, and considering Zalal’s willingness and ability to drag opponents to the mat, that’s a death sentence. Choi doesn’t even figure to have much of an edge on the feet, as Zalal’s length, durability, and savvy make landing a knockout shot a borderline impossible task. “The Moroccan Devil” should be a much larger favorite, so make sure you’re in position to punish the bookies for their error. UFC Vegas 18 Odds For The Main Card: Edgar Believes Finish Over Sandhagen Earns Him UFC Title Shot. Reem Will вЂRetire Immediately’ After Winning Title. Thoughts: Alistair Overeem, Alexandre Pantoja and Cody Stamann are your investments of choice. I’m genuinely not clear on why Alexander Volkov is the favorite against Overeem. That’s because “Drago’s” best wins came over Fabricio Werdum and Walt Harris, both of whom Overeem also defeated, and looks to struggle against the Dutchman’s mobile striking offense. On top of that, Volkov has yet to fully address the grappling issues that have plagued him throughout his UFC career, presenting another tempting target for the well-rounded Overeem. In short, the veteran is a definitely worth your time. Manel Kape has looked like a monster in his last few Rizin bouts, but those came against opponents willing to oblige him in the stand up. The last time he faced a capable grappling specialist, “Ulka” Sasaki dominated him on the mat. Pantoja is tough as nails and a hugely dangerous submission artist, giving him the tools necessary to spoil Kape’s Octagon debut. Stamann, meanwhile, was -310 against Andre Ewell, which if anything undersold the stylistic nightmare he posed to “Mr. Highlight.” He’s still a bargain at -380 against Octagon newcomer Askar Askar, not to be confused with Flyweight contender Askar Askarov. Askar is an okay wrestler with painfully bad striking defense that Stamann should have little issue exploiting, making “The Spartan” a reliable anchor. UFC Vegas 18 Best Bets: Parlay — Youssef Zalal and Alistair Overeem: Bet $40 to make $107.20 Parlay — Timur Valiev and Lara Procopio: Bet $30 to make $61.50 Parlay — Cody Stamann and Alexandre Pantoja: Bet $40 to make $49.20. UFC Vegas 18 is a damn strong card and a perfect return to form after UFC’s January blitz. Don’t miss it. See you Saturday, Maniacs! UFC 257 McGregor Vs. Poirier Betting Odds, Picks & Expert Predictions. ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - JANUARY 21: (L-R) Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor face off . [+] during the UFC 257 Press Conference inside Etihad Arena on UFC Fight Island on January 20, 2021 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Zuffa LLC via Getty Images. Conor McGregor returns to the cage tomorrow night to face Dustin Poirier in the UFC’s first pay-per-event of 2021, live from the league’s Abu Dhabi Fight Island. Current McGregor vs. Poirier betting odds heavily favor the Irishman at -325. The two last met in 2014, where McGregor dropped Poirier with a 1st round TKO that won him “Performance of the Night” honors and set him on a path to clinch both the UCF’s Featherweight and Lightweight belts. This rematch signifies McGregor’s return to the lightweight division, a class where his last victory came in 2016’s Title win over Eddie Alvarez, a belt he would lose two years later after being submitted by current belt holder Khabib Nurmagomedov. While McGregor blossomed into the UFC’s biggest pull, Porier rebounded from the 2014 loss and has quietly strung together an impressive of victories himself. Having gone 6-1-1 since the start of 2017, Dustin’s lone loss comes to one of the few to defeat McGregor; Khabib. The Inside Story Of A Trump Pardon Gone Wrong. Psychedelic Toads Pushed To The Limit, Conservationists Urge Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT Option. Idaho Senate Passes Constitutional Ban On Legal Marijuana. Conor’s inactivity seems to hold little weight in the mind of oddsmakers, with McGregor lined as a heavy -325 favorite (bet $325 to win $100), and given that 19 of his 24 total professional fights have ended in KO victories, a similar result here is favored at -200. McGregor’s fists tend to do the talking, with only one submission victor to his name, and all four of his defeats have come the way of submission. Where Conor is often viewed as an aggressive fighter, Poirier actually outpaces his opponent slightly when comparing significant strikes per minute stats. With Conor relying heavily on timing to set up his infamous left hand, Poirier will look to disrupt the fight’s rhythm by dictating both its pace and controlling the distance between the two. In doing so, it's safe to expect Poirier to rely on his advancing approach where he looks to walk into his opponents, forcing them to remain on their heels and keeping him inside of the distance. Here, McGregor’s left hand is somewhat limited and his leg kicks will not deliver the same impact. We have seen fighters suffer from cage rust following extended absences from the ring, yet McGregor has proven time and time again that his breaks from fighting often see him return rested and focused. The UFC needs a name to sell tickets, and where this matchup is no cakewalk for the вЂNotorious’ the oddsmakers look to have this thing right in backing a McGregor KO victory. Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys Betting Preview. Closing out their NFC East division season series, NFL Week 17 betting action features Washington visiting Dallas. One of the oldest rivalries in the NFL, the Redskins and Cowboys clash at 4:25 p.m. ET on Dec. 29, 2019, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Dallas needs a win, plus a Philadelphia loss, to claim the NFC East title. Game Total: OVER 44.5 (-110) | UNDER 44.5 (-110) Washington Redskins’ Recent Form. Playing out the string, Washington is still battling down the stretch. The Redskins scored a season-high in points but lost 41-35 in overtime to Giants in New York last week. Prior to that, Washington lost a pair of close contests, 37-27 versus Philadelphia at home and 20-15 on the road in Green Bay. Washington is 2-5 SU and 4-3 ATS on the road this season. · Betting Record: SU 3-12 | ATS 6-9 | O/U 7-8. · Offense: 31, scoring 16.7 points per game. · Defense: 24, allowing 25.9 points per game. Dallas Cowboys’ Recent Form. With an opportunity to lock up the NFC East title on the line, Dallas lost 17-9 in Philadelphia during a dismal Week 16 performance. The Cowboys’ playoff hopes took a hit during a 31-24 Week 14 loss in Chicago but they rebounded with a 44-21 home win over the LA Rams in Week 15. Dallas is 4-3 straight up and against the spread at AT&T Stadium. · Betting Record: SU 7-8 | ATS 8-7 | O/U 9-6. · Offense: 8th scoring 25.87 points per game. · Defense: 11th allowing 20.3 points per game. · Turnover Rank: 18th with a -2 differential. Dallas vs. Washington Playoff Scenarios: What’s at Stake? Backing out of the playoff race, Dallas now needs a win and a Philadelphia loss to claim its second straight NFC East division title. The Eagles are in New York to battle the Giants. If Dallas wins, and gets help, it advances as the fourth seed in the NFC playoff standings. As a division winner, the Cowboys would host a Wild Card game next week. Cincinnati sits last overall, with a 1-14-0 record, and has locked up the first pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Washington is 3-11-0 and holds the second pick slot just ahead of Detroit, who has a 3-10-1 record. The Redskins’ last three losses have been by 10 points or less, and they should draw some motivation from this being a bitter division rivalry duel. Cowboys vs. Redskins Recent History – Week 2 Rematch. Dallas went into Washington and posted a 31-21 victory during the first meeting back in Week 2. Dak Prescott had 269 passing yards and three TD while Case Keenum put up 221 pass yards and two TDs. The Cowboys’ ground game was also clicking as Ezekiel Elliott had 111 rushing yards and one TD. Washington has lost three straight games in Dallas. Injury Update: Prescott Will Play – Haskins Is Out. First injured back in Week 14, Dak Prescott continues to play through a shoulder injury and won’t practice much this week. The Cowboys starter followed a similar practice path last week before his terrible outing against Philadelphia. Also hampered by a left-hand sprain plus a right index finger injury, Prescott lacked velocity on his downfield passes and was inaccurate throughout the game versus the Eagles. Amari Cooper isn’t on the Cowboys injury report, but he hasn’t looked right while dealing with an assortment of lower-body injuries throughout season. Cooper caught four of 12 targets, had some critical drops, and managed just 24 receiving yards against the Eagles’ shorthanded secondary. Backup LG Xavier Su'a-Filo (leg) is out, so Dallas is down to third-string left guard Joe Looney on the offensive line. Dwayne Haskins suffered a high-ankle sprain last week and won’t play against the Cowboys. After opening the season as the Redskins starter, Case Keenum will make his first start since being benched in Week 9. Injured late last week, stud receiver Terry McLaurin is in concussion protocol and will be a game-time decision. Redskins top cornerback Quinton Dunbar has been placed on injured reserve. Washington Covers More Than Dallas at AT&T Stadium. This series moved from Texas Stadium to AT&T Stadium in 2009. Since then, Dallas is 7-3 straight up but just 3-7 against the spread versus Washington. The Cowboys won and covered (31-23 and 38-14) the last two meetings in Texas. The Redskins and Cowboys have both played some high-scoring games recently and, on the fast track at Jerry World, that trend continuing would not be a surprise. Dallas vs. Washington Final Thoughts and Pick. Facing an injury-riddled Eagles squad, Dallas backers expected more last week. They certainly didn’t get the same effort the Cowboys displayed when they blitzed the Rams 44-21 in Week 15. Instead, the Cowboys lost the time of possession battle (36:12 to 23:48), managed just 16 first downs and went 3-14 on third-down attempts. After a 5-3 start to the season, Dallas has stumbled during a recent 2-5 losing skid. Ezekiel Elliott faces the Redskins’ 29th-ranked run defense that just allowed Giants RB Saquon Barkley to rack up 279 total yards and two TDs. Case Keenum played well when Haskins left the game last week and, led by Terry McLaurin, he has an emerging group of young receivers. Washington looks to avenge the early season loss, and knocking Dallas out of the playoffs should be added motivation. Take the points and back Washington.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins Betting Predictions. The NFC East is a dumpster fire right now as every team is at least two games under .500 and within one game of the division lead. The current front runners, the Dallas Cowboys, have a tricky matchup this week on the road against Washington, who gambled and lost last week on a two-point conversion at the end of the game. The Cowboys were thrashed by Arizona and though I don’t think Washington will dominate, Dallas is in a tailspin right now that Washington should take advantage of this week. Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins Betting Odds. The Dallas offense was a mess last week against Arizona in its first game without Dak Prescott at the helm. The Cowboys had four turnovers against the Cardinals and didn’t score a touchdown until the final three minutes of the game with the outcome already sealed. The defense continued to be a disaster as well, but that at least can be overcome if the offense can click. Andy Dalton threw the ball 54 times and still only gained 266 yards, which is definitely not the ratio you want from your starting quarterback. The running game was sub-par as well at just 3.6 yards per carry and the Cowboys just looked like a team missing its offensive leader. That puts more pressure on the defense to figure it out, not that there is any sign the Cowboys are any closer to stopping teams. Kyler Murray only completed nine of his 24 attempts, but he made them count with long touchdown throws and other deep passes to exploit the porous secondary. Washington presents an interesting conundrum for Dallas because this is a defense that ranks sixth in the NFL in terms of yards allowed. I’m a bit more skeptical on the fact Washington ranks second in passing defense because most teams are running the ball against Washington late in games with big leads, but it also should be noted. This defense will give the Cowboys problems, especially if Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t solved his fumbling problems. The bigger question is whether or not the Washington offense can exploit the Dallas defense for enough points to win. Washington has one of the worst offenses in the NFL, but then again we said that about the Giants, who hung 34 on the Cowboys two weeks ago. Antonio Gibson should have a big day for Washington and it will be a good test of Kyle Allen’s abilities in his third start for the team. The bet on the total points in this game was set at 46, and that is a very interesting number. Dallas’ offense couldn’t score until very late against Arizona, but Washington’s defense isn’t as good as the Cardinals’ unit. Washington doesn’t have the quarterback to throw for a lot of yards against this Cowboys’ defense, but it could run the ball a lot on Dallas. Last week’s Dallas game barely eclipsed that 46-point total, so I’ll stick with the under 46 points total for -110 odds at the New Jersey online sports betting sites. As part of that, though, I’ll take the under 23 points on Dallas for -106 odds because I don’t trust this Cowboys offense to score without Prescott. Redskins to win.

In their eight away games this season, the Chiefs were 4-4 calling the toss. When they won the flip, they chose to defer all four times. As for the Buccaneers, they won the toss four times in their four home games when the other team called the flip. In three of those wins, they deferred, opting to receive in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons. It’s a toss-up (pun intended), but I’m leaning CHIEFS (-105) here to win the toss and defer. Orland Man Pleads Guilty To Conducting Illegal Sports Gambling. Vincent "Uncle Mick" Delgiudice, also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Yasmeen Sheikah , Patch Staff. ORLAND PARK, IL — An Orland Park man pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday, for conducting an illegal sports gambling business and laundering the proceeds through an offshore company, according to the Northern District of Illinois U.S. Attorney's Office. Vincent "Uncle Mick" Delgiudice, 55, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering — which is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison — and one count of conducting an illegal gambling business — which is punishable by up to five years, the plea states. He may also face a term of supervised release, of no more than three years. Prosecutors said the multi-million illicit operation took bets on sporting events from as many of 1,000 gamblers on professional and amateur sports including football, basketball and baseball. According to the plea, Delgiudice admitted that from 2016 to 2019 he directed an illegal bookmaking business in Chicago, Lemont, Frankfort, Orland Park and Woodridge. He and his associates accepted wagers on the outcome of the sports, including some collegiate. U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Kendall did not immediately set a sentencing date, but a status hearing was set for March 8. Nine other men, including Casey Urlacher, the younger brother of the Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher, were accused of running an illegal sports gambling business in February 2020. Urlacher was one of 73 people granted full pardons by former President Donald Trump. Also charged in the February 2020 indictment were Matthew Knight, 46, of Mokena, also known as "Sweaters" and "McDougal;" Justin Hines, 40, of Algonquin; Keith D. Benson, 49, of Lemont; Todd Blanken, 43, of Cary; Nicholas Stella, 42, of Chicago; Matthew Namoff, 23, of Midlothian; Vasilios Prassas, 37, of Chicago and Eugene "Gino" Delgiudice, 84, who prosecutors say helped collect debts and pay out winnings. According to a motion filed on Jan. 21, 2021, Stella was released on bond in March 2020, and his bond was revoked, after he violently assaulted his girlfriend at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Jan. 16. His girlfriend, Veronica Michaud, said Stella tried to kill her, attempted to strangle her, hit her in the face, tore her blouse and stole her phone, so she can't call 911, and then dragged her down the hallway before finally releasing her and fleeing, according to the motion. The FBI's Integrity in Sport and Gaming Initiative (ISG) is designed to tackle illegal sports gambling and combat threats of influence from criminal enterprises.
How does illegal sports betting work and what are the fears? By Puneet Pal Singh Business Reporter, BBC News, Singapore. 19 February 2013. Betting and sports have been bedfellows for centuries. But the relations between the two have been deteriorating. The biggest setback has come from the rise of illegal betting. The industry has grown not just in terms of revenue, but also in its reach, and there are now fears over its influence on the outcome of sporting events. The allegations of match-fixing across various sports have once again got sporting bodies and lawmakers across the globe worried and they are trying to find ways to counter the sector's growing might.
Your Super Bowl Squares Pool Is Likely Illegal Even Though Nearly Half The Country Has Legalized Sports Betting. TAMPA, FLORIDA - JANUARY 31: An aerial view of Raymond James Stadium ahead of Super Bowl LV on . [+] January 31, 2021 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images) If you are thinking about hosting a Super Bowl squares pool this weekend, you may wish to think again. Even though the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act nearly two years ago, it is still illegal in most states for an individual, without a license, to operate a Super Bowl squares pool. In addition, if a Super Bowl squares pool involves participants from multiple states, the pool is likely to violate federal law. For those who are unfamiliar, Super Bowl squares pools are very popular contests at this time each year. In these contests, fans who are planning to watch the Super Bowl purchase one of 100 boxes from a ten-by-ten matrix. After all 100 boxes are purchased, the horizontal and vertical axes of the matrix are given a random number from 0 to 9, with one axis representing the last digit of the AFC team’s final score and the other representing the last digit of the NFC team’s score. At the end of the Super Bowl, the entrant whose name is listed in the box that matches with the final digits of the final scores for both the NFC and AFC teams wins a prize—generally cash. While these contests are undoubtedly a fun side activity while watching the Super Bowl, these contests also function as private lotteries, which arguably divert funds from state-sanctioned public lotteries as well as from legally licensed forms of sports betting. As a result, these contests are strongly frowned upon by state gaming commissions. From the perspective of black-letter law, in most states a contest such as a Super Bowl squares pool (or boxes pool) would be deemed to constitute an illegal lottery if the contest involved three elements: consideration (generally an entry fee), prize and chance. Because Super Bowl squares pools involve randomly assigned numbers rather than numbers chosen by the contest entrants, these pools certainly would be found to be games of chance. Thus, so long as a Super Bowl squares pool includes both an entry fee and a prize, as a technical matter it is illegal for a private individual, without a license, to host a contest of this nature. Beyond these state law risks, Super Bowl squares pools also may fall on the wrong side of various federal laws. For example, under the Interstate Wire Act of 1961, it is illegal for individuals to engage “in the business of betting or wagering [through the knowing use of] a wire communication for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce.” Thus, any Super Bowl squares pool that is conducted across state lines and includes at least one state in which the underlying activity is illegal would seem to violate the Wire Act.
Illegal Sports Betting. Illegal Sports Betting. Sports betting is a huge industry. Some states have legalized certain activities in recent years, but many online betting sites and activities are still unlawful. To avoid illegal sports betting, you must understand and follow current state and federal laws before making a wager. Illegal sports betting has real consequences for people who place and receive wagers—and for the safety of the American public. Organized crime groups often run illegal gambling operations. These groups often use the money made from illegal gambling to fund other criminal activities, like the trafficking of humans, drugs, and weapons. These operations may also be involved in tax evasion and money laundering. One of the FBI’s priorities is to investigate organized crime groups that operate illegal sports betting operations and disrupt and dismantle their activities. Besides possibly funding organized crime activities, people who place wagers with illegal sports betting operations may be at risk of extortion and violence, which bookmakers may use to collect debts. Report Illegal Sports Betting. To help address this crime, the FBI encourages anyone with information about illegal sports betting operations to submit a tip online or report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Tips can be kept anonymous.
